  • Trust and Transparency in Artificial Intelligence

    Open Access•Thomas Mitchell, Thomas J Mitchell•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2025

Can we trust AI? It is a question that is asked with increasing frequency and urgency as artificial intelligence becomes ever more adept at performing tasks hitherto performed almost exclusively by human beings. There are certainly reasons to be cautious, among which is the problem of understanding the inner workings of AI. Adapting themselves through machine learning, modern AIs rapidly become so complex that nobody can follow the processes by w…

  • Dynamic Bilingualism to Dynamic Writing: Using Translanguaging Strategies and Tools

    Open Access•Onudeah D Nicolarakis, Thomas Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 43

This study is a qualitative analysis of a naturally occurring translanguaging phenomenon in the writing practices of fifteen high-scoring deaf bilingual adult writers. This study aims to identify translanguaging factors related to writing achievement and explore themes that emerge within an asset-based/antideficit, deaf bilingualism/Deaf Gain theoretical framework. Data were gathered by collecting, reviewing, coding, and identifying overarching t…

  • Intranasal oxytocin in rhesus monkeys alters brain networks that detect social salience and reward

Open Access•Lisa A Parr, Thomas Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2018

In primates, resting state functional neuroimaging (rsfcMRI) has identified several large-scale, intrinsic brain networks, including the salience network (SN), which is involved in detecting stimulus salience. Intranasal oxytocin (IN-OT) has been shown to modulate the salience and rewarding quality of social stimuli in mammals and numerous studies have shown that it can affect the functional connectivity between brain regions. Less is known, howe…

  • Danceroom Spectroscopy: At the Frontiers of Physics, Performance, Interactive Art and Technology

Thomas Mitchell, Thomas J Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2016•Cited by: 1

danceroom Spectroscopy is an interactive audiovisual art installation and performance system driven by rigorous algorithms commonly used to simulate and analyze nanoscale atomic dynamics. danceroom Spectroscopy interprets humans as "energy landscapes," resulting in an interactive system in which human energy fields are embedded within a simulation of thousands of atoms. Users are able to sculpt the atomic dynamics using their movements and experi…
