The oversimplification of ancient Egyptian concepts
The paper presents several case studies on obscure words and passages in the Coffin Texts to demonstrate that this corpus remains significantly understudied and many of its current interpretations suffer from oversimplification. The comparative analysis of cognate passages and motifs throughout the Coffin and the Pyramid Texts highlights some so far unrecognized concepts in the early Egyptian mortuary texts and suggests that these texts are much …
L3 Sentence Processing
The article investigates non-native sentence processing and examines the existing scholarly approaches to L2 processing with a population of L3 learners of English, whose native language is Russian. In a self-paced reading experiment, native speakers of Russian and English, as well as (low) intermediate L3 learners of English, read ambiguous relative clauses (RC) and decided on their attachment interpretation: high attachment (HA) or low attachme…
Reading Coffins
An Evident Desideratum in Egyptian Lexicography
It has been over 50 years since the publication of the final volume of the Coffin Texts in 1961, but one of the most extensive corpora of Egyptian texts is far from having been investigated with the degree of attention and accuracy it deserves. The scrutiny of the Coffin Texts can enlarge knowledge of Egyptian lexica, as these texts allow not only to refine the meanings of some words that have not been accurately defined yet, but even to reveal n…
Fine Tuning of Meaning. Considerations of some disputable fragments of literary texts
It has been suggested that difficulties with interpreting some problematic passages in Egyptian texts may be due to the inaccurately determined lexical meanings. The article concentrates on the semantic peculiarities of three words and endeavors to gain better comprehension of some difficult literary passages. New interpretations are offered for Ptahhotep 95-96, 107, 385-386; Merikare E 74, 111; The Dialogue of a Man with his Ba 99-101; and The M…
Twelve notes on Ipuwer
Review of a Roland Enmarch’s recent commentary on the ancient Egyptian poem The Dialogue of Ipuwer. The fundamental book under review is a major contribution to our understanding of this literary composition. However, the challenging text of The Dialogue is obscured by corrupt transmission, which invites further study. The authors discuss twelve passages from The Dialogue and update the renderings offered by Enmarch
A systematic analysis of performance measures for classification tasks
