  • Intonational Focus Marking by Syrian Arabic Learners of German

Open Access•Zarah Kampschulte, Angelika Braun et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 60

Acquiring prosodic focus marking in a second language (L2) is difficult for learners whose native language utilizes strategies that differ from those of the target language. German typically uses pitch accents (L+H*/H*) to mark focus, while (Modern Standard) Arabic preferably employs a syntactic strategy (word order) or lexical means. In Syrian Arabic, a variety which is predominantly oral, pitch accents are used to mark focus, but the distributi…

  • Disfluencies Revisited-Are They Speaker-Specific

Open Access•Angelika Braun, Nan Elsasser et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2023•References: 42

The forensic application of phonetics relies on individuality in speech. • Is forensic speaker identification unethical -- or can it be unethical not to do it

Angelika Braun, Hermann J Künzel•ARTICLE•International Journal of Speech…•1998

This paper makes a case for forensic speaker-identification, but only if the practitioner is properly trained and carries out the task conscientiously. It could be argued (and has been argued) that it is unethical to engage in forensic speaker-identification until there is a well-established and fully automatic (i.e. machine-based) approach available: in other words phoneticians should not practise in this field at all until the subjective elemen…

  • Age estimation by different listener groups

    Angelika Braun•ARTICLE•International Journal of Speech…•1996

This contribution is focused on the perception of speaker age. With forensic applications in mind, the following questions are. asked : (1) are trained listeners better at estimating a speaker s chronological age than untrained listeners, (2) are listeners more confident about correct estimates than incorrect ones and (3) do a speaker's smoking habits influence perceived age? The results of an experiment involving direct age estimations by expert…

  • The audio going with the video - some observations on the Rodney King case

    Angelika Braun•ARTICLE•International Journal of Speech…•1994

While the so-called Rodney King video of a black man being beaten by a number of white policemen taken by a man named George Holliday on 3 March 1991 has been broadcast world-wide via CNN, the sound-track of that recording has attracted a much lesser degree of attention. This may in part be due to the fact that the quality of the sound-track is adversely affected by noise generated by a police helicopter. This case report focuses on different asp…
