  • The Evolution of Spanish Ver ‘to See’ in Constructions with a Predicate Participle or Adjective

Open Access•Chantal Melis, María Isabel Jiménez Martínez et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2025

The focus in this corpus-based study is on a set of Spanish constructions formed with the verb of visual perception, ver ‘to See’, and a predicate adjective or participle. In addition to a clearly recognizable transitive schema, the set includes various instances featuring a reflexive clitic pronoun coreferential with the subject, some of which have been argued to evidence the grammaticalization of lexical ver into a univerbated semicopular verb …

    Open Access•Milagros Alfonso Vega, Chantal Melis•ARTICLE•Borealis – An International…•2024

Este trabajo se centra en las estrategias a través de las cuales algunos verbos clasificados como intransitivos con atención a su significado básico se insertan en construcciones transitivas. A partir del estudio de cuatro verbos (descansar, despertar, trabajar y vivir), que evidencian procesos de transitivización en datos de uso (CORPES XXI), identificamos mecanismos recurrentes y generalizables al ámbito de los verbos intransitivos en español. …

  • Diverging Grammaticalization Patterns across Spanish Varieties

Open Access•Marlies Jansegers, Chantal Melis et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2023•References: 35

This study investigates the contemporary grammaticalized uses of perdón ('sorry') in two varieties of Spanish, namely Mexican and Peninsular Spanish. Methodologically, the investigation is based on a taxonomy of offenses, organized around the concept of 'face' and based on spoken data of Spanish from Mexico and Spain. This taxonomy turns out to be a fruitful methodological tool for the analysis of apologetic markers: it does not only offer usage-…

  • Los verbos disfrutar y gozar en el español medieval. Un estudio sobre conexiones entre la agricultura, el placer y la posesión

Open Access•Chantal Melis, Blanca Elena Sanz Martin•ARTICLE•Anuario de Letras Lingüística y…•2022

The verbal items disfrutar and gozar in Spanish share similar meanings and also resemble each other in switching from a transitive to an intransitive frame with a prepositional phrase complement. However, this was not always the case. In the oldest recordings of the Spanish language, indeed, there appear two lexical forms which, besides their opposition from a syntactic point of view (transitive vs. prepositional verb), express rather distinct ty…

  • On the interplay between forces of erosion and forces of repair in language change A case study

Chantal Melis, Marcela Flores•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica Historica•2009

This article investigates the origins and development of the ergative patterning in Hindi. Following traditional Indo-Aryan scholarship, two evolutions are discerned: (i) the reanalysis of a passive as an ergative construction, and (ii) the development of an ergative case marker ne. Three different hypotheses have been postulated in the literature to account for the latter change, two of which suggest a grammaticalization path: the first argues f…
