  • Conversations on Dictionaries

Open Access•William A Ross, Esther Schor et al.•BOOK•Conversations on Dictionaries•2025

How did dictionaries come to be? When and how did they originate in a specific language? Who was involved in that origin story? How have they evolved over time? What is the tension between scholarly and commercial, and between prescriptive and descriptive, dictionaries? What is the politics behind each dictionary? And what is the connection between dictionaries and nation-building? This fascinating book has the answers. It brings together a colle…

Open Access•Federica Vezzani, Giorgio Maria Di Nunzio et al.•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2025

The interoperability of language resources is crucial for effective communication and data exchange across various computational systems. In this context, the ISO/TC 37 standards, specifically the Lexical Markup Framework (LMF) and the Terminological Markup Framework (TMF), play a vital role by providing a common framework for the modelling, representation, and exchange of lexical and terminological data. The LMF has been deliberately aligned wit…

  • Le rôle du référent en terminologie

    Open Access•Federica Vezzani, Rute Costa•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2024

  • Variation in psychopathological terminology

    Open Access•Federica Vezzani, Rute Costa•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2024

Representing specialized knowledge in the medical domain implies considering the dynamism of scientific and technological progress. The advancement of knowledge on diseases goes hand in hand with the reconceptualization processes undertaken by experts with consequent conceptual evolutions and possible variations of the terms used to designate medical concepts. Sometimes term variation is the result of a desire to avoid or overcome negative connot…

  • Knowledge-based terminological e‐dictionaries

Open Access•Christophe Roche, Rute Costa et al.•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2019

The advent of the Semantic Web and of the Linked Data initiative have contributed to new perspectives and opportunities regarding terminology work. Among them are the double dimension approach and the theoretical perspective of ontoterminology anchored therein, which explore the synergies resulting from the systematic organisation of both term systems and concept systems. By doing so, they provide a theoretical and methodological foundation under…

  • Improving the consistency of usage labelling in dictionaries with TEI Lex?0

Open Access•Ana Salgado, Rute Costa et al.•ARTICLE•Lexicography•2019

This paper analyzes the application of usage labels in three representative lexicographic works, namely the Portuguese, Spanish, and French Academy Dictionaries as a starting point for creating a consistent classifcation of usage labels and their encoding in accordance with TEI Lex-0. The use of labels is not always entirely consistent within individual dictionaries and even less so across diferent lexicographic projects. This makes the tasks of …

    Rute Costa•ARTICLE•Lexicographica - International…•2013

This paper focuses on finding links and dissimilarities between Terminology and Specialised Lexicography. This debate is not new though. However, the evolution of Terminology into other spheres of activity besides lexicography and specialised communication has strengthened the differences between these two domains. Translators that need to access structured knowledge in order to transfer it from one linguistic system into another need both the pr…
