    Open Access•Matthew Lorenzen, Fátima Martínez-Reyes et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2023•References: 29

The literature on the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic shows that the impacts on women were particularly harsh, as lockdowns increased their household workloads and devastated female-dominated occupations. However, little has been published on the construction of livelihood strategies to offset the impacts of the pandemic. Analysis of the strategies of women in two rural municipalities of the Mixteca Alta region in Mexico shows an increa…

  • From rural exodus to repopulation in Mexico's Mixteca Alta? Analyzing differential trends

    Open Access•Matthew Lorenzen•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 18

This paper analyzes differential trends in rural depopulation and repopulation in nine municipalities of Mexico's Mixteca Alta region, in the southern state of Oaxaca, based on census data and interviews carried out in 2019. From 1950 to 2000, the study area experienced a substantial loss of population, linked essentially to out‐migration to Mexico City. However, from 2000 to 2020, four of the municipalities regained population, while the remaini…

    Open Access•Matthew Lorenzen•ARTICLE•Perfiles Latinoamericanos•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Andrew R Smolski, Matthew Lorenzen•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 27

"This issue’s focus is on the structural roots of violence in Latin America and on violence’s connections with capitalism and colonialism. After decades of neoliberalization—the retreat of the state from its social obligations, the privatization of public goods and services, deregulation in favor of business, a regressive fiscal policy shifting the tax and fee burden onto the general population, and stagnation in wages and benefits—it appears tha…

    Open Access•Matthew Lorenzen•ARTICLE•Journal on Migration and Human…•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 5

A growing body of literature has argued that the distinction between forced and voluntary migration can be, in practice, unclear. This literature points out that each individual migrant may have mixed motives for migrating, including both forced and voluntary reasons. Few studies, however, have actually set out to analyze mixed-motive migration. This paper examines the mixed-motive migration of unaccompanied minors from Central America's Northern…
