To prevent any succour to the insurgents’: Enslaved insurgency and the Royal Navy in the Caribbean, 1795–1832
While the actions of foreign navies and enemy privateers in the Caribbean have occupied the minds of maritime scholars, the role of the Royal Navy as an instrument of counterinsurgency to be used in suppressing self-liberation struggles by the enslaved has received much less attention. Yet, across the Caribbean, the Royal Navy was instrumental in securing victory for the colonial elite. In addressing this lacuna, this article revisits Fédon's reb…
A most active, enterprising officer’: Captain John Perkins, the Royal Navy and the boundaries of slavery and liberty in the Caribbean
John Perkins was the most senior black officer in the Royal Navy during the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He rose through the ranks from a carpenter’s enslaved servant in 1759 to post-captain in 1800, and went on to be one of the very first British officials to land in newly independent Haiti in 1804. His career as a spy, gun-runner, naval officer and land owner was one of almost implausible advent…

Hyphae-Specific Genes HGC1, ALS3, HWP1, and ECE1 and Relevant Signaling Pathways in Candida albicans
Fungal virulence mechanisms include adhesion to epithelia, morphogenesis, production of secretory hydrolytic enzymes, and phenotype switching, all of which contribute to the process of pathogenesis. A striking feature of the biology of Candida albicans is its ability to grow in yeast, pseudohyphal, and hyphal forms. The hyphal form plays an important role in causing disease, by invading epithelial cells and causing tissue damage. In this review, …

The Impact of Poverty on Children and Young People’s Use of Services
This article describes a qualitative study exploring the impact of poverty on children’s access to and use of services, which took a comparative approach to gather the views of children from more and less affluent households. Findings suggest affordability and related factors including limited mobility constrained service use for less affluent children, resulting in cumulative missed opportunities. However, extended family, friends and agencies f…

Whither Cuban Socialism: The Changing Political Economy of the Cuban Revolution
Given overwhelming global dominance of neoliberalism and capitalism today, Cuba is almost alone in providing an alternative socialist political, social, and economic path to development. This path has undergone huge changes over past four decades, and since breakup of Soviet bloc in early 1990s Cuban socialism has suffered greatly and has had to respond in unforeseen ways. Though changed fundamentally, Cuban Revolution has not only managed to sur…
