  • Reflections on Religion and Gender

    Open Access•Elina Vuola•ARTICLE•Religion and Gender•2021

  • Reinventions of an Old Tradition

    Elina Vuola•ARTICLE•Numen•2020•Cited by: 1

This article examines two cases of Finnish Orthodox traditions of procession and pilgrimage that are currently being reframed in response to physical, political, and religious disruption. Annual Orthodox processions are now held in Northern Karelia close to and across the Finnish-Russian border, while the pilgrimage of St. Tryphon of Pechenga, the patron saint of the Skolt Saami in northeastern Finland, crosses the border between Finland and Norw…

  • Orthodox Christianity and Gender

Open Access•Helena Kupari, Elina Vuola•BOOK•Orthodox Christianity and Gender•2019

The Orthodox Christian tradition has all too often been sidelined in conversations around contemporary religion. Despite being distinct from Protestantism and Catholicism in both theology and practice, it remains an underused setting for academic inquiry into current lived religious practice. This collection, therefore, seeks to redress this imbalance by investigating modern manifestations of Orthodox Christianity through an explicitly gender-sen…

  • Intersections of gender and minority status

    Open Access•Elina Vuola•ARTICLE•Nordisk judaistik/Scandinavian…•2019

In this article, I examine how contemporary Finnish Jewish women understand their roles and identities as women in a small Orthodox Jewish community, on the one hand, and as members of a tiny minority in largely secular and predominantly Lutheran/Christian Finland, on the other. How do Finnish Jewish women negotiate their identities in relation to their community, strongly organised along gender lines, and in relation to Finnish society and espec…

  • The Virgin Mary across Cultures

    Open Access•Elina Vuola•BOOK•Virgin Mary Across Cultures•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This book examines women's relationship to the Virgin Mary in two different cultural and religious contexts, and compares how these relationships have been analyzed and explained on a theological and a sociological level. The figure of the Virgin Mary is a divisive one in our modern culture. To some, she appears to be a symbol of religious oppression, while to others, she is a constant comfort and even an inspiration towards empowerment. Drawing …

  • The Embodied Mother of God and the Identities of Orthodox Women in Finland and Setoland

    Open Access•Andreas Kalkun, Elina Vuola•ARTICLE•Religion and Gender•2017

In this article, we analyze two contemporary local Eastern Orthodox contexts, Estonia and Finland, which are related and yet different. We are especially interested in how women negotiate with their Orthodox faith and, within it, the figure of the Mother of God. We are interested in the intersections of popular Mariology (both beliefs and practises), gender and ethnicity. We explore Marian interpretations among Finnish and Estonian Seto women bec…

  • Remaking Universals

    Open Access•Elina Vuola•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article looks at how religious fundamentalism is aiming at influencing the international discourse on women's rights, especially reproductive rights. Simultaneously, we are witnessing the rise of something we could call transnational feminism(s). Much of the recent academic discussion on universalism, anti-universalism and cultural relativism is centered on Islam, but this discussion has larger relevance, for example in Latin America and in …
