  • The Two-Way Effects of Populism on Affective Polarization

    Open Access•Braeden Davis, Jay Goodliffe et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2025•Cited by: 15•References: 58

Despite attention in comparativist and Americanist literatures to populism and affective polarization, relatively little theoretical and empirical work has been done linking these two concepts. We present a comprehensive theory arguing that populism leads to greater affective polarization among both populist citizens and non-populist citizens, and that the latter effect grows as populism increases. We test this two-way effect using V-Dem expert r…

  • The Ideational Approach to Populism

Kirk Hawkins, Ryan Carlin et al.•BOOK•The Ideational Approach to Populism•2018

Populism is on the rise in Europe and the Americas. Scholars increasingly understand populist forces in terms of their ideas or discourse, one that envisions a cosmic struggle between the will of the common people and a conspiring elite. In this volume, we advance populism scholarship by proposing a causal theory and methodological guidelines – a research program – based on this ideational approach. This program argues that populism exists as a s…

  • Populism and Its Causes

Kirk Andrew Hawkins, Kirk Hawkins et al.•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of Populism•2017

Studies of populism increasingly theorize about its causes. Most arguments highlight the rational, material side of populist appeals or their connection to political identity. However, these arguments focus on regional varieties of populism, give little attention to the individual level of voter cognition, and overlook the role of populist ideas. In this chapter, we outline and critique these theories while offering a new approach. This theory bu…

  • Local public goods as vote-purchasing devices? Persuasion and mobilization in the choice of clientelist payments

    Open Access•Guillermo Rosas, Noel P Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 24

We consider the behavior of an incumbent that can deploy local public goods and private goods to buy votes, and is unable to verify vote choice but capable of monitoring voter turnout, a common scenario in secret-ballot polities. As advanced by recent literature, the ability to monitor turnout rather than vote choice implies that politicians should use targetable private goods to mobilize voters. However, politicians also deploy non-excludable lo…

  • Populism in Venezuela

Kirk Andrew Hawkins, Kirk Hawkins•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2003•Cited by: 31

In the 1990s Venezuela experienced the rise of a new anti-party movement built around the figure of Hugo Cha ́vez and dedicated to the fundamental transformation of society, a movement that most Venezuelans call Chavismo. If we define populism in strictly political terms—as the presence of what some scholars call a charismatic mode of linkage between voters and politicians, and a democratic discourse that relies on the idea of a popular will and …
