  • Reflections, research, and implications of decades of activism by educators to create a movement to address sexual harassment in K‐12 schools in the United States

    Open Access•Nan Stein, Bruce G Taylor•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2023

An organized response to sexual harassment (SH) in K‐12 schools in the US traces its development as a social movement to the larger women's rights movement in the late 1970s. It was an outgrowth of the social movement of feminist activists who protested and filed lawsuits to draw attention to SH in the workplace to gain recognition for the problem as one of equity for working women. The focus on SH in K‐12 schools did not begin as an academic pur…

  • My Walks for 21 Years with Sally Engle Merry

    Open Access•Nan Stein•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•2020

I knew the outside Sally. We walked together for over 21 years, mostly around Lake Waban at Wellesley College; we could turn a 40-minute walk on the path around the lake into an extended 75-minute excursion by going off the path, then bush whacking our way back. In the winters, we walked on the nearby golf course and into the woods; and when we were pressed for time, we walked in a small neighborhood park near her home in Wellesley. As her breath…

  • Do schools normalise sexual harassment? An analysis of a legal case regarding sexual harassment in a Swedish high school

Katja Gillander Gådin, Nan Stein•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2017•Cited by: 18•References: 12

Sexual harassment has become so frequent and ubiquitous in schools that these behaviours have become normalised and expected. In order to prevent the re-enactment and perpetuation of this problem, it is important to explore processes that contribute to its existence. A high school sexual harassment lawsuit in Sweden is used as a case study to illustrate ways that might explain how sexual harassment is normalised at the organisational level. A the…

  • Obscuring Gender-Based Violence: Marriage Promotion and Teen Dating Violence Research

    Carrie Baker, Nan Stein•ARTICLE•Women & Politics•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 35

This article argues that United States public policies have prioritized marriage and healthy relationship promotion over research and education about gendered violence in teen dating relationships, despite evidence of the prevalence of intimate partner and teen dating violence that disproportionately impacts women and girls. The lack of a gender-based analysis reflects a shift from a feminist framing of violence that focuses on the safety and wel…

  • Middle School Sexual Harassment, Violence and Social Networks

Elizabeth A Mumford, Janet Okamoto et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2013

Collection of sensitive relationship data via a school-based Web survey is feasible. Full-scale studies and greater flexibility regarding the number of friendship nominations are recommended for subsequent investigations of potential sex differences

  • Patriarchy Matters: Toward a Gendered Theory of Teen Violence and Victimization

Open Access•Lyn Mikel Brown, Meda Chesney-Lind et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2007

This article explores the role that the sex–gender system plays in shaping both the violence and victimization of girls. Taking first the issue of girls' violence, the article argues that steep increases in girls' arrests are not the product of girls becoming more like boys. Instead, forms of girls' minor violence that were once ignored are now being criminalized. Shifting gears, the article explores how “gender-neutral” relabeling of girls' vict…
