Aggressors' Rights
The moral and legal debate over the separation of jus in bello from jus ad bellum generally assumes that the law of war supports this separation and the concomitant doctrine of ‘equality between belligerents’, also known as the ‘duality’ or the ‘symmetry’ principle. This article examines the Nuremberg-era precedents and legal scholarship, as well as more recent legal and scholarly material, and argues that the general assumption is wrong and that…
A Web-Based Game for Collecting Music Metadata
We have designed a web-based game, MajorMiner, that makes collecting descriptions of musical excerpts fun, easy, useful, and objective. Participants describe 10 second clips of songs and score points when their descriptions match those of other participants. The rules were designed to encourage players to be thorough and the clip length was chosen to make judgments objective and specific. To analyse the data, we measured the degree to which binar…

Yet the growing importance of consulting income could divert time and energy away from academic research and teaching, whi…

Dworkin, Hart, and the Problem of Theoretical Perspective
The following article analyzes the dispute between legal philosophers Ronald Dworkin and H.L.A. Hart over the nature of legal rights. The author argues that central to this dispute is a pervasive methodological problem of social theory, the "problem of theoretical perspective." He makes use of a distinction between "internal" and "external" perspectives to defend what he conceives to be Hart's more fully social approach to the conceptualization o…
