Improving consistency and feedback in essay-type assessments
BACKGROUND: Reliable assessment and meaningful feedback are essential to effective learning in medical education. However, conventional unstructured evaluation of essay-type responses is highly vulnerable to rater bias, inter-rater variability, and nonspecific feedback. To address these limitations, we developed an Assessment-cum-Feedback Checklist to provide a structured, criterion-based approach to scoring and feedback. In this study, we evalua…
Dock Labour and a Connected History of Workers in Early Twentieth Century Calcutta
This article argues that class formation and labour radicalism in the industrial cities of colonial India need to be located in connected histories of workers, which go beyond analysis of single industries. It shows that the horizontal mobility of workers in early twentieth-century Calcutta was a result of a pervasiveness of casual work, both among the ‘unskilled’ and the skilled. Skill levels and occupations were crucial in defining the boundari…
Workers’ Way”
The postwar situation in Calcutta was part of the picture of seething anticolonial popular and labor discontent in the Indian subcontinent; this was perhaps the most radical, the most potent, period for the subalterns in the country. However, this complex historical moment with varied, competing, shifting, overlapping tendencies has been reduced and flattened in the historiography. It is as if the twin events of partition and independence were in…
The War at the Workplace
The upheavals of World War II prepared a new labour regime in twentieth-century India, in employers’ chambers, government offices, and in the newly established Labour Department, but as crucially, at the workplace and on the shop floor. This article studies the case of Calcutta port, an important military port in Southeast Asia after the fall of Singapore and Rangoon, where the complex historical processes resulting from the war generated an unpr…
