Learning with owls
Urban encroachment increasingly threatens wildlife survival and well‐being, underscoring the need for design and management to consider nonhuman species. This article analyses cases of positive coexistence between humans and Powerful Owls ( Ninox strenua ) to identify key challenges, opportunities, objectives and practical strategies for urban planning. As a species historically linked to old‐growth forests, powerful owls now inhabit urban enviro…
Ellipsis interference revisited
An active question in psycholinguistics concerns how we mentally encode and retrieve linguistic information in memory. In particular, it remains unclear what information (“cues”) guide retrieval. Previous work has extensively tested retrieval of noun phrases, but less is known about retrieval of other constituents, including verb phrases (VPs). This study examines retrieval for VP ellipsis to allow for a more comprehensive theory of cues. Four ex…
Toward Interspecies Art and Design
Urbanization severely reduces opportunities for nonhuman habitation and undermines nonhuman subjectivities, aesthetic experiences, behaviors, traditions, and cultures. In response, humans need to reimagine cities as places for interspecies cohabitation. In this article, a team of architects and ecologists demonstrates that such reimagination depends on the cultural behaviors of multiple species. The authors illustrate the implications of this dep…
