The Cruise of H.M.S. Galatea
In 1867, Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, commissioned the Galatea for a voyage around the world which would include the first royal visit to Australia. Stopping along the way in Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town, Alfred was received with great ceremony at each port of call. These visits provided the ship's chaplain John Milner (1822–97) and the artist Oswald Brierly (1817–94) with ample material for this chronicle, published in 1869, which…

The Battle of Baugé, March 1421
On 22 March 1421, Henry V's brother and heir presumptive, Thomas, duke of Clarence, was killed in battle at Baugé in Anjou by a Franco-Scottish force. Clarence had engaged the enemy without proper preparation and with no archers to support him. For Henry V who had made inexorable progress since the start of his French campaign in 1417, this represented a serious and unexpected reverse. This article examines both contemporary and later reactions t…

On the Fusion of Verbal and Visual Media
The author points out the interest that a number of poets and artists have shown in the fact that the awareness of an event or an object, imaginary or observed, is rooted in more than one of the senses. He mentions the poetic works of the French symbolists and the Italian futurists and the paintings and drawings of Odilon Redon, of the cubists and the futurists and of the pioneers of non-figurative or abstract art in which the verbal and visual m…

The Seventy Weeks of Daniel, and Persian Chronology
One would naturally think that a prophecy like that of the seventy weeks (heptades) of Daniel—known to have been fulfilled—would admit of easy proof and explanation; but so far is this from being the case that (as Professor Stewart justly remarks) “it would require a volume of considerable magnitude to give a history of the ever-varying and contradictory opinions of critics respecting this locus vexatissimus , and perhaps a still larger one to es…

XI. On the use of the Pax in the Roman Catholic Church
I herewith send for your inspection, and that of our learned brethren of the Society of Antiquaries, should you judge it worthy of that honour, an ecclesiastical instrument of ancient use in the Roman Catholic Church, though now hardly known to the members of it, called a Pax
