Open Access•Tim Cook, Matthew Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Historical Review•2021

This article will assess the role of Canada’s Merchant Navy during the Second World War and appraise shifting government attitudes towards the civilian mariners in veterans’ legislation in the postwar period. By examining the factors that contributed to the civilian mariners’ initial exclusion as veterans, this study sheds light on the complex process whereby the state evaluates and then reassesses what is owed to those who serve. The redress cam…

  • Development and Monte Carlo Study of a Procedure for Correcting the Standardized Mean Difference for Measurement Error in the Independent Variable

Open Access•William R Nugent, Matthew Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2015

The standardized mean difference (SMD) is perhaps the most important meta-analytic effect size. It is typically used to represent the difference between treatment and control population means in treatment efficacy research. It is also used to represent differences between populations with different characteristics, such as persons who are depressed and those who are not. Measurement error in the independent variable (IV) attenuates SMDs. In this …

    Matthew D Moore, Matthew Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Local Government Studies•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 44

Social capital has been demonstrated to be a benefit to a community in a variety of ways. However, researchers have begun to point out that social capital does have a downside. Communities that use bonding social capital to mobilise residents to action have the potential to exclude outsiders from their communities. The number of governments in a county could be used as an indicator of bonding social capital within a region. Residents use their lo…

  • Selling to Both Sides: The Effects of Major Conventional Weapons Transfers on Civil War Severity and Duration

    Matthew Moore•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2012•Cited by: 12•References: 25

Civil wars are primarily fought with small and light arms, but the availability of major conventional weapons to states and rebels can alter the nature of the war being fought. This study explores the impact of major conventional weapons transfers on civil war severity and duration. By using a recipient based approach to arms transfers, I find rebel acquisition of major conventional weapons from international sources leads to conflict escalation …

Nearly every international arms embargo has been systemically violated by arms exporting states. Although much work has been done exploring why states transfer arms, little has been done to answer the question of why states choose to violate arms embargoes. Earlier studies have found that states transfer arms to one another for a variety of economic and strategic reasons. This study constructs a time series cross-section data set to test whether …

  • Genealogies of the Event
