In the physical world, choices about self-representation are tied to the body. However, avatar embodiment offers users many more options. These options are often constrained or promoted according to the economic models of the platforms that support different virtual worlds. Still, work on user motivations for avatar embodiment has generally not accounted for these constraints. To help explain users' interest (or lack of interest) in immersive tec…
Survey of Adherence with Covid-19 Prevention Behaviors During the 2020 Thanksgiving and Winter Holidays Among Members of the Covid-19 Community Research Partnership
Prevention behaviors represent important public health tools to limit spread of SARS-CoV-2. Adherence with recommended public health prevention behaviors among 20000 + members of a COVID-19 syndromic surveillance cohort from the mid-Atlantic and southeastern United States was assessed via electronic survey following the 2020 Thanksgiving and winter holiday (WH) seasons. Respondents were predominantly non-Hispanic Whites (90%), female (60%), and ≥…
The Machine as an Extension of the Body
This research explores how the technological affordances of emerging social virtual environments and VR platforms where individuals from an online disability community are represented in avatar form, correspond to these users’ development of embodied identity, ability, and access to work and social communities. The visual attributes of these avatars, which can realistically reflect the user’s physical self or divert from human form entirely, rais…
Defining empathy
While a consumer revolution in virtual reality (VR) has piqued the interest of many fields, industries, and professions, it is unclear when, how, and to what degree the technology can elicit empathy. To better understand how the relationship between VR and empathy is communicated and defined, we performed qualitative and quantitative thematic analyses on popular ( N = 640) and academic articles ( N = 53) that included both terms. Findings reveale…

Cat JonesMy artworks Plantarum: Empathic Limb Clinic and Somatic Drifts alter participants’ perception through visual-tactile illusion and synaptic reorganization, generating their reflection on transitory states and the malleability of the body matrix and triggering new experiences of empathy with the nonhuman.Plantarum: Empathic Limb Clinic blends concepts of neuroscience and horticulture via a cortical reorganization experiment, or what I call…
Evolving Identity Economies in Social Virtual Worlds
It is only in the past few years that the public has had much access to embodied, immersive, social virtual worlds through consumer virtual reality hardware. While these new experiences are still restricted to those who can access the proper equipment and have sufficient network connectivity, academics and others have rushed to explore and explain them. A rich history of experimental research scaffolds our understanding of what the experience of …
Digital identities – overcoming visual bias through virtual embodiment
This study sheds new light on the role of identity in virtual environments when virtual representation of self is in support of disabled individuals and the potential impact of their virtual identity on work opportunities. It is widely understood that individuals who live with disability often experience a lifetime of bullying, exclusion, marginalization and rejection. They often experience workplace bias and discrimination. Yet, when they can cr…
The Philanthropic Avatar
Unprecedented access to global philanthropic audiences via social media demands creative strategies to identify and motivate donors. One social medium not typically considered in the popular mix is virtual worlds. Using a multi-method ethnographic approach, this study contributes to the strategic communication body of knowledge by examining the purposeful usage of communication by organizations in virtual environments to build support communities…
Finding Healthcare Support in Online Communities
With the advent of social media technologies, debate continues to swirl around the ability of these technologies to either connect or isolate. Healthcare support communities represent an especially vulnerable population who can potentially gain most significantly from the ability to connect via online social support groups. This paper reviews current literature on the efficacy of online social support groups, with a particular interest in 3-D onl…
