The Functional Hypothesis
The articulation of experiments, observations of prehistoric use-wear, and settlement-subsistence model testing has remained implicit in most studies and largely oriented toward cultural reconstructionism. This paper discusses the weaknesses of the analogy-based approach and suggests an alternative that uses experiments and other means to test the hypothesis that functional dimensions are represented in a prehistoric assemblage. The results of a …
Endymion's Moonbath
This study interprets the natural ‘effects’ contained in Girodet’s ‘Sleep of Endymion’ against the background of certain scientific discoveries made during the latter part of the eighteenth century. French atmospheric investigations confirmed the existence of a transient ocean of air subject to tides because of lunar influence. Aerial perturbations produced light-related phenomena such as electricity (Endymion’s‘charged’ form). phosphorescence (h…
Some Issues Concerning The Design Of Lithic Experiments
NotesAn earlier version of this paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology, Tucson, 1978
Burin Manufacture and Utilization
Burins were experimentally manufactured and utilized to differentiate the effects on wear patterns of raw material, method of manufacture, material utilized, and mode of utilization. Differing methods of manufacture and modes of utilization were employed to test the assumed function of burins as being exclusively bone/antler working tools. Results of univariate and multivariate statistical tests are presented along with differentiating characteri…
