  • Aesthetics of Hallucination

Open Access•Sandra Cuevas, Reynaldo Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Artnodes•2023

Throughout this text we will analyze some human concerns that are the subject of analysis in different fields of knowledge such as philosophy, art, science and technology. These concerns revolve around what is reality? what is fiction? what are the effects of hallucination? and what is virtuality? through different cultural products such as art, literature, cinema, psychoactive or entheogenic experiences, up to the most recent proposals of Virtua…

  • The Interrelation of Art, Science, and Technology from a Cognitive Dimension

Open Access•Beatriz Escribano-Belmar, Raquel Caerols Mateo et al.•ARTICLE•Rupkatha Journal on Interdisciplina…•2023

The interrelation between art and science can be understood as a dialogue that emerges from the process of knowledge construction, and consequently, it also defines the human being. The idea may be legitimated from a cognitive perspective. What if we consider this dialogue on the art/science split not as a model of knowing in itself, but as a constructed concept? Thinking as a construct, the advent of technology could have supposed an element to …

  • Computer Artist Manuel Felguerez

Open Access•Reynaldo Thompson, Manuel Felguerez•ARTICLE•Rupkatha Journal on Interdisciplina…•2022

This interview cum memoir of Manuel Felguerez, by the author, describes the development of two projects in the words of the Mexican artist Manuel Felguerez himself. Felguerez speaks of his experience as a Latin American artist, his encounter with digital technology in the united states and the trajectory of art that his work takes during an intense and experimental period of creativity in the seventies. Felguerez’s explorations were embodied in t…

  • Surveillance en la Frontera

    Open Access•Reynaldo Thompson•ARTICLE•Rupkatha Journal on Interdisciplina…•2019

Political ideology is now made manifest and even palpable with a perverse articulation of digital technique, for once on its own, and without the need of any kind of narrative.Art by itself is enough. The ideologue is relegated to an unimportant location following a praxis that evades primordial dependence on the conventions of any discourse.Starting from a discussion of two important video installations by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, this article propo…

  • Microbial Nanoids

Reynaldo Thompson, Tirtha Prasad Mukhopadhyay•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In this paper the authors describe the pioneering robot designed by Arcangel Constantini, called the Nanodrizas (2006). Nanodrizas is a cluster of small robots resembling extraterrestrial flying objects. They are introduced into an ecosystem for water recycling, among other effects. The result of a seriocomic robotic device like the Nanodrizas is to make the viewer aware of the specific technology that would one day allow humans to invite machine…

  • Aesthetics of Biocybernetic Designs

Reynaldo Thompson, Tirtha Prasad Mukhopadhyay•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The authors identify some of the theoretical premises of biocybernetic art objects, with reference to the works of Nam June Paik, Edward Ihnawitz, Ulrike Gabriel, and most notably, Gilberto Esparza, the Mexican biocybernetic artist. Systems theory anticipates stochastic convergences in nature, defying the classic certitude of the teleological notion of form. Evidence for this paradigmatic shift is found in the biocybernetic creatures conceived by…
