Analysing the employment impact of Sunday wage premiums reductions
This article tests the employment impact of recent reductions in Australian wage premiums, or penalty rates, using surveys of 1828 employees and 236 employers in Retail and Hospitality sectors. In applying wage premium reductions for Sunday work, the national regulator, the Fair Work Commission, anticipated improvements in trading hours, employment and hours worked as a consequence. However, the authors found no statistically significant evidence…
Multidimensional Wellbeing Inequality in a Developing Country
Lie Back and Take It
This article considers the position of the patient in a hospital bed and the ways in which artists with severe illnesses have utilised this. The hospital bed allows biomedicine full control and access to the body and renders the sick person as patient. Lying in bed becomes a position of passiveness, submission and vulnerability. In this article I explore the ways in which artists have worked with the duration of the hospital bed in order to re-im…

Flesh-eaters
This article reflects upon Martin O'Brien's 2015 commission Taste of Flesh/Bite Me I'm Yours as part of Trust Me, I'm an Artist, a Creative Europe-funded project. O'Brien discusses the ethics of witnessing the "sick body" in performance and considers the concept of disease as a mode of spectatorship-a concept employed in order to think through the politics of witnessing difficult performance work by artists with illnesses. The artist particularly…

A 'Lasting Transformation' of Capitalist Surplus
In this article I link surplus food with the politics of capitalist production and consumption in order to shed some useful light on the strange case of food not being food once it has been discarded but not thrown away. I develop an analysis of waste policy as a dimension of capitalist surplus management (after Sweezy, 1962 ) by reconfiguring Claus Offe's (1984) essay on the state and social policy and construe waste policy as effecting a 'lasti…
The Vertigo of Late Modernity by J. Young
London : Sage ( 2007 ) xii + 231pp . £21.99pb ISBN 1-4129-3573-9 Eloquent, direct, scholarly and sometimes poetic, The Vertigo of Late Modernity is the latest instalment of Jock Young's attempt to sketch the sociological contours of the contemporary world. Here, Young repaints the portrait of his version of ‘late modernity’ whose outlines were presented in The Exclusive Society (Young 1999). In some respects the present book is an autocritique of…
Social exclusion in Europe
In the late 20th and early 21st century, social exclusion has become something of a trope around which is pegged justifications for various reforms. The notion of social exclusion has found its way into the lexicon of all major global governance institutions. How has this happened, and what are its implications for scholars of contemporary welfare reforms? In this article, we consider the ‘rise and rise’ of the discourse of social exclusion, with…
Kill-n-tell (& all that jazz)
This article uses the lens of cultural criminology to explore representations of the seductions of crime (Katz, 1988) in Hollywood cinema. We use a specific film - Chicago(Miramax Films, 2002) - to investigate the cultural embeddedness of the emotional and sensual parameters that are said to constitute the foreground of criminal activity. We suggest that the stated aim of cultural criminology - to connect the phenomenal foreground of criminal act…
What is Cultural About Cultural Criminology
In this paper, I undertake a critical evaluation of the central claims of cultural criminology. In particular, I argue that the project is characterized by important confusions over what is meant by 'culture' in the analysis of deviant and criminal activity. These confusions are found both in cul tural criminology's key empirical works and in the emerging theoretical frameworks that seek to interpret crime through the lens of culture. I suggest t…
The Spectacle of Fearsome Acts
Con me if you can’
This article deals with current re-dramatizations of crime and popular criminologies. It analyses key elements of the popular criminological imaginaries underpinning a recent and highly successful film— Catch Me If You Can—in order to tease out the discursive, mythical and fabulist techniques by which it communicates particular imaginations of crime. Additionally, the article offers some conceptual and analytical anchors for interpreting filmwork…

European Policy and the Politics of Environmental Governance
In this paper we focus on identifying some of the important sociological dimensions of the process of environmental governance through a review of European regulatory frameworks and instruments, specifically in regard to the European Union’s Fifth Action Programme on the Environment (5EAP). We show that such policies and the institutions and social networks that promote them are locked into wider social dynamics in the political regulation of Eur…
Postmodernizam i socijalna politika
Postmodern theory and politics
In this paper we consider some contributions made by postmodern perspectives to theoretical and political questions of citizenship and social justice. Postmodern theory is often dismissed as a distraction from pressing questions of material inequality and economic and political exploitation. In the paper we distinguish between ‘ludic’ or ‘spectral’ postmodernisms and ‘oppositional’ or ‘resistance’ postmodernisms. We suggest that the latter provid…

Postmodernism and Social Policy
The term 'postmodernism' has recently entered the study of social policy, prompting debate over its usefulness for social policy analysis. Peter Taylor-Gooby's (1994) appraisal of literatures often described as 'postmodern' leads him to reject them as having little to offer the discipline of social policy. This article argues that such a view derives from a confusion about the field of 'postmodernism'; in particular, from a conflation of several …
The Managed Heart Revisited
In this paper I investigate emotional labour in the field of nursing. I show how new ideologies of health promotion have become attached to the prior agenda and already-embedded relationships which structure health provision. Beginning with an outline of health promotion principles and policies the paper goes on to trace how the radical dimensions of health promotion philosophies are subverted in practice by discussing data from a research projec…
Global Environmental Values and Local Contexts of Action
The effects of environmental change on individuals and societies are receiving increasing attention. Local, national and international organisations are all undertaking research and developing policy on environmental management and regulation. This level of concern appears, initially, to indicate a positive and growing awareness of human-environment interactions. However, it is not clear that in developing agenda for action the different parties …
The role of the nurse in health promotion
This paper describes and discusses issues concerned with the role of the nurse in health promotion work. It represents the first phase of a research project designed to explore this role, and presents the evolving philosophical framework for the study. The study is taking place currently in the United Kingdom and has been made possible by the (first) award of a Post Doctoral Nursing Research Fellowship to the project director. Against the backdro…
Foucism, Marxory & Histault
The application of a 'Foucaultism' to contemporary critical analysis is by no means an easy task and Poster's book contains many valuable insights into the functioning of Foucault's work - particularly as it relates to modern Marxisms - within critical theory. Yet there remain a number of important themes which Poster appears merely to gloss over (eg, the precise nature of 'historicity', the relation between the dialectic and reason, etc) providi…
