Identifying the deep drivers of system change: A rule-based approach to socio-technical system mapping
Deep transitions and the evolution of the digital meta-regime
Integrated framework of intervention points and transformative outcomes for single- and multi-system transitions
Where is the deep sustainability turn most likely to emerge? An Industrial Modernity Index
Long-term country-level evidence of major but uneven ruptures in the landscape of industrial modernity
When the types do not make sense: Seven lessons to improve typology-building for energy transitions research
Deep transitions: A mixed methods study of the historical evolution of mass production
Industrial societies contain a range of socio-technical systems fulfilling functions such as the provision of energy, food, mobility, housing, healthcare, finance and communications. The recent Deep Transitions (DT) framework outlines a series of propositions on how the multi-system co-evolution over 250 years of these systems has contributed to several current social and ecological crises. Drawing on evolutionary institutionalism, the DT framewo…
Towards a multi-scalar and multi-horizon framework of energy injustice: A whole systems analysis of Estonian energy transition
The shift from carbon-intensive to low-carbon energy systems has profound justice implications as some regions are likely to lose as much as gain from decarbonization processes. Increasing calls have been made to adopt a ‘whole systems’ perspective on energy justice. Drawing on the Multi-level Perspective on socio-technical transitions this paper presents a new comprehensive framework of energy justice in system innovation, proposing to map injus…

Deep transitions: Theorizing the long-term patterns of socio-technical change
Mapping ‘the ANT multiple’: A comparative, critical and reflexive analysis
Despite decades of development, Actor‐Network Theory (ANT) continues to be characterized by a good deal of ambiguities and internal tensions. This situation has led to a suggestion that instead of one ANT it may be meaningful to speak of ‘the ANT multiple’. Following this line of reasoning, this article aims to create a map of the variety of positions riding under the ANT banner. Based on an in‐depth reading of ANT literature, seven different int…
The roles of users in shaping transitions to new energy systems
User-made immobilities: A Transitions Perspective
In this paper we aim to conceptualize the role of users in creating, expanding and stabilizing the automobility system. Drawing on transition studies we offer a typology of user roles including user-producers, user-legitimators, user-intermediaries, user-citizens and user-consumers, and explore it on the historical transition to the automobile regime in the USA. We find that users play an important role during the entire transition process, but s…
From General Patterns to Middle-range: A Proposal for a Top-down Theorizing Strategy
While grounded theory involves many iterations between concept-building and concept-testing, the overall direction of analysis proceeds from loosely related concepts to tightly interrelated theoretical systems. Such a 'bottom-up' logic of analysis may lead to a number of problems, for example descriptiveness or missing out on large-scale general patterns. This paper proposes to alleviate these problems by adopting a 'top-down' methodological stra…
