This volume explores the socio-cultural dynamics of religious speeches through an analysis of Christian and Islamic sermons and preachers in the past and present. Max Stille•ARTICLE•South Asian History and Culture•2021•References: 8

This article proposes ways how to access emotions in Islamic preaching. Conceptually, it brings together the often-juxtaposed spheres of body and mind; nature and culture; aesthetics and religion. Based on extensive research on Islamic sermons in Bangladesh between 2012 and 2015, it stresses the form of public speech as the means to access the emotional potentials of oratory. It argues that a focus on emotions allows us to gain a deeper understan…

    Open Access•Stephen Thomas Cummin, Max Stille•ARTICLE•Journal of Religious History•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 4

At the same time, the article explores the potentials of sermons as a …

  • Islamic Sermons and Public Piety in Bangladesh: The Poetics of Popular Preaching

Max Stille•BOOK•Islamic Sermons and Public Piety…•2020

Islamic sermon gatherings are a central form of public piety and public expression in contemporary Bangladesh. Held since the 19th century, waz mahfils became so popular that it is today possible to participate in them on a daily basis in many regions of the country. Despite their significance in the rise of popular politics, the sermons are often disregarded as Islamist propaganda and very little research is dedicated to them

  • Conceptual History and South Asian History

Max Stille•ARTICLE•Contributions to the History of…•2019

This review article provides an overview of important, recent approaches to conceptual history from scholarship on South Asia. While conceptual history is not a consolidated field in South Asia, the colonial encounter has greatly stimulated interest in conceptual inquiries. Recent scholarship questions the uniformity even of well-researched concepts such as liberalism. It is methodologically innovative in thinking about the influence of economic …
