  • Sensing, feeling, thinking: Relating to nature with the body, heart and mind

Open Access•E Pramova, Bruno Locatelli et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2021

The cultural ecosystem services (CES) construct has evolved to accommodate multiple worldviews, knowledge systems and conceptualizations of nature and values, including relational and mental health values. Cultural ecosystem services research and practice has mostly focused on cognitive ways of constructing and expressing intangible values of, and relationships with, nature. But our non‐material relationships with nature are not exclusively cogni…

  • Marooned Plants: Vernacular Naming Practices in the Mascarene Islands

    Christian A Kull, Christian Kull et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and History•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article explores possible histories of plant exchanges and plant naming tied to the slave trade between East Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. The subsequent ' marronnage ' of slaves on these islands – their escape from captivity, sometimes to live in mountain hideouts – continues to inspire cultural references. Inspired by the use of the adjective ' marron/marronne ' for a number of plants on Reunion Island, we compile evidence …

  • Multifunctional, Scrubby, and Invasive Forests: Wattles in the Highlands of Madagascar

Open Access•Christian A Kull, Christian Kull et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2007

Australian bipinnate acacias, known locally as mimosa, are widespread on the plateaus and mountains of Madagascar. Rarely, however, do these trees attain their full size, leading to a surprising landscape of ‘scrubby’ wattles. We review the introduction of the wattles, survey their multiple uses in rural livelihoods and environmental management, and analyze the forestry policies, tenure rules, and ecological factors that maintain the trees' scrub…
