Caste Logos
This chapter examines elements of language through which caste, as an inherited social identity, is enunciated. The focus is on specific sets of words, the logos of caste in Tamil, thereby setting aside the daily practice(s) of caste. A Sociological Grammar of Belonging
This contribution sets out to examine the dialectic of self and other in the Tamil idioms of caste belonging through two discreet yet pervasive windows. On the one hand, it examines a basic linguistic feature of Tamil grammar: clusivity. Unlike most Indo-European languages, there exists two first person plural pronouns “we”: nāma and naṅka.
