  • Seeing Like a Field

Open Access•Katrin Herms, Jörg Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2025

This article introduces the notion of seeing like a field – the view from the inside of a Bourdieusian field in which agents and their social positions are located. Potentials and fallacies of concretizing field theory with social network analysis (SNA) are evaluated on the basis of two examples of current research approaches to big visual data: computer vision networks and image similarity analysis

  • La Recolección De Datos Como Laboratorio Epistemológico. Algunas Reflexiones Acerca Del Entorno Virtual De Investigación Revistas Culturales 2.0

  • Graphical viewing at a distance

    Open Access•Fabienne Kilchör, Jörg Lehmann•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2021•References: 2

In this research article, graphical analytics is presented as a method for the investigation of page/layout- and image-based materials. This approach is used to analyse image composition, image constellations and the layout of the examined books, and it facilitates a comparison across several books within a single visualization. The methodology is introduced and the epistemology explained, along with concepts such as framework, simulative and heu…

  • Measuring Historical Emotions and Their Evolution

Open Access•Hanno Ehrlicher, Roman Klinger et al.•ARTICLE•Liinc em Revista•2019

The empirical study of emotions in Spanish travelogues and reports requires cultural knowledge as well as the use of linguistic annotation and quantitative methods. We report on an interdisciplinary project in which we perform emotion annotation on a selection of texts spanning several centuries to analyze the differences across different time slices. We show that indeed the emotional connotation changes qualitatively and quantitatively. Next to …

  • Structure of complex networks

    Open Access•Michael T Schaub, Jörg Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•Network Science•2014•References: 6

The analysis of complex networks has so far revolved mainly around the role of nodes and communities of nodes. However, the dynamics of interconnected systems is often focalized on edge processes, and a dual edge-centric perspective can often prove more natural. Here we present graph-theoretical measures to quantify edge-to-edge relations inspired by the notion of flow redistribution induced by edge failures. Our measures, which are related to th…
