  • Sloppy symmetry under ellipsis

Jeroen Van Craenenbroeck, Kyle Johnson•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2025•References: 1

This paper focuses on the behavior of symmetric predicates under ellipsis. Building on Stockwell (Stockwell, Richard. 2020. Contrast and verb phrase ellipsis: Triviality, symmetry, and competition . UCLA. Doctoral Dissertation), we examine the phenomenon of participant and transitivity switching under VP-ellipsis, which symmetric predicates permit but non-symmetric ones do not. While Stockwell takes this as evidence for a semantic identity condit…

  • Gapping

    Open Access•Kyle Johnson•OTHER•The Wiley Blackwell Companion to…•2017

Gapping is a construction type, found in many languages, in which part of a second conjunct is missing and supplied by material in the first conjunct. It has properties that segregate it from other seemingly similar constructions like VP and clausal ellipsis which are examined in this chapter. Those properties include: a locality condition not found elsewhere, a restriction to coordinations, apparent violations of constituency, and unexpected sco…

  • Gapping Is Not (VP-) Ellipsis

    Kyle Johnson•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2009•Cited by: 30•References: 16

Pseudogapping is no misnomer. Despite their many tempting similarities, gapping and pseudogapping are distinct constructions. Pseudogapping is a special instance of VP-ellipsis, while gapping, I argue, is a special instance of across-the-board movement. Squeezing gapping into across-the-board movement has its own discomforts, however, which I suggest can be remedied by retailoring our syntax to include string-based output constraints. I sketch on…

  • Double Objects Again

    Beck, Sigrid Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2004•Cited by: 41•References: 10

In this article, we explore the interaction of the verb again with double object constructions and the corresponding NP+PP constructions. The restitutive reading that again gives rise to in combination with these predicates supports an analysis of double object constructions according to which they contain a small clause with a head predicate HAVE, and an analysis of the corresponding NP+PP constructions that is not transformationally related and…

  • Restoring Exotic Coordinations to Normalcy

    Kyle Johnson•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 6

I analyze two instances in German where coordinations seem to violate Ross's (1967) Coordinate Structure Constraint. I follow Schwarz 1998 and argue that the two constructions are underlyingly the same, one deriving from the other through gapping. Using the thesis that the verb-final word order in German involves a short leftward movement of the finite verb or verb phrase, I provide a method of avoiding the Coordinate Structure Constraint violati…
