In Sublimity’s Wake
This research paper comparatively assesses Deleuze’s and Lyotard’s post-Kantian thought on the sublime. Initially, I argue that their unfaithful treatment of Kant bears consonance in dramatizing the heterogeneity of the transcendental faculties, relegating determinate thought to a subsidiary consideration, and conceiving of aesthetics as an excessive mode of production rather than a reflective form of judgement. The decision promised to lift the burden of exemplary Step 1 performance off students, but key details remain unresolved and unavailable to those needing answers. Medical st…
Coastal wetlands mitigate storm flooding and associated costs in estuaries
As storm-driven coastal flooding increases under climate change, wetlands such as saltmarshes are held as a nature-based solution. Yet evidence supporting wetlands’ storm protection role in estuaries—where both waves and upstream surge drive coastal flooding—remains scarce. Here we address this gap using numerical hydrodynamic models within eight contextually diverse estuaries, simulating storms of varying intensity and coupling flood predictions…
Liaison in French
French liaison gives evidence of the relationship between phonology and other levels of description. Various hypotheses attempting to explain this phenomenon in French: such as the insertion of some linking consonant or other; the inefficient truncation of citation forms, are shown to be inadequate.Similarly, the idea of the liaised syntagm being a “phonological word” cannot begin to offer an explanation, because linking is determined by syntax. …
