Order across domains
The article presents a domain-neutral account of two Swedish prepositions, före ‘before’ and efter ‘after’, and discusses some of its theoretical implications. In contrast to a domain-specific approach, which delimits meanings along domain lines, the domain-neutral approach pursues generalisations over domains, aiming to subsume senses in different domains (such as space and time) under a single lexical description. It is argued that this approac…
Motion in event structure
According to a localist theory of event semantics, event types such as state changes and realisation of actions are based on motion events, which are taken to be the primary type of event. The present paper investigates some claims of this theory, their consequences and conceptual foundations. It argues that the theory suffers from two flaws. First, the theory proposes parallels between event types that, upon closer scrutiny, appear to be absent.…
On the feasibility of general meanings in prepositional semantics
The paper investigates the status of general meanings in prepositional semantics. On the basis of a review of the strategies employed in different accounts of prepositions, the paper argues that strict adherence to the notion of general meanings is unfeasible in the field, partly because a purely deductive method of description breaks down as the number of possible oppositions increases. This failure points to the need for a theoretical reformula…
Towards a domain-neutral prepositional semantics
Prepositions with a range over several conceptual domains are often described as polysemous between these domains. Typically, spatial senses are seen as basic, while temporal and abstract senses are assumed to be derived from space. The present article argues in favour of an alternative analysis in which domain-neutral properties of prepositions are used to account for similarities between instances in different domains. Methodological considerat…
Equivalence and polyvalence
The article presents a semantic theory suggesting that equivalence and polyvalence are closely connected phenomena. The connection between them is utilised by making equivalence the basis of an argument for polyvalence within semantics, or in other terms, for a stratified semantics encompassing two levels of description. This argument from equivalence lends new support to frameworks assuming a stratified semantics. For the argument to work…
