Contrastive Studies in Verbal Valency
In recent years, issues of verbal valency, valency alternations and verb classes have seen a new upsurge of interest from a variety of perspectives. This book comprises articles investigating valency phenomena on a contrastive basis within Romance, Germanic and Slavic, and also in Basque and in the West-African language Ga, as well as classical Greek and Sanskrit. Phenomena include transitive and ditransitive constructions and alternations, invol…

Introduction to the special issue on semantic maps
Author's Reply - What Semantic Maps Show and What They Are Good for
In their commentaries, Heiko Narrog and Bernhard Wlchli raise interesting questions with the approach I am advocating in my paper. I will start with Bernhard Wlchli"s commentary, since it is more on a critical note, and thus requires a more elaborate response
Analyzing Semantic Maps
In this paper I argue that semantic similarity is not the only factor which motivates polysemy patterns cross-linguistically; I also show that these other factors (markedness, distinguishability, etc) may give rise to polysemies which are problematic for established semantic maps. Only when these other interfering factors, both functional and structural, are featured out, does a semantic network emerge and a "similarity map" reduce to a semantic …
The Oxford handbook of case
This handbook provides a comprehensive account of research on case and the morphological and syntactic phenomena associated with it. Scholars from all over the world provide overviews of theoretical, typological, diachronic, and psycholinguistic research and assess cross-linguistic work on case and case-systems
Animacy and asymmetries in differential case marking
Case-Marking Strategies
Two strategies of case marking in natural languages are discussed. These are defined as two violable constraints whose effects are shown to converge in the case of differential object marking but diverge in the case of differential subject marking. The discourse prominence of the case-bearing arguments is shown to be of utmost importance for case-marking and voice alternations. The analysis of the case-marking patterns that are found crosslinguis…
Case, Valency and Transitivity
The three concepts of case , valency and transitivity belong to the most discussed topics of modern linguistics. On the one hand, they are crucially connected with morphological aspects of the clause, including case marking, person agreement and voice. On the other hand, they are related to several semantic issues such as the meaning of case, semantico-syntactic verbal classes, and the semantic correlates of transitivity. The volume unifies paper…
Constraining nominalization
The present article deals with constraints on transcategorial processes such as nominalization. In particular, it addresses the issue whether one can predict the order in which verbal categories are lost and nominal categories are acquired in nominalization. It is argued that the disruption/acquisition of categories in transcategorial processes is determined by functionally based hierarchies of nominal and verbal categories, as suggested in the f…
