  • The expression of negation in southern Tujia

Open Access•Man Lu, Jeroen Van De Weijer et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman…•2026

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive description of the forms and distribution of negation expressions in southern Tujia (Tibeto-Burman), an endangered language spoken in southern China, from a diachronic perspective and comparing the negation forms with those in northern Tujia. Southern Tujia employs different negators, some of which are disappearing, while some new ones are being introduced. Furthermore, negation is sometimes preverbal, s…

  • Digital twin applications in an archaeological site

Open Access•Wanqin Liu, Man Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Architecture…•2024

A digital twin is a virtual counterpart of a physical object or system based on precise data collection. Although digital twin applications are gaining traction in the virtual reconstruction of built heritage, their relevance in archaeological sites remains limited, especially for those with only foundations. The Pishan (毘山) site in Huzhou, featuring the remains of a high-platform building and a large stilt-style architecture, represents the larg…

  • Impact of information technology capabilities on organizational resilience

Open Access•Mingwei Li, Shaoen Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2024

Organizational resilience is becoming a priority for enterprises’ survival in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) contexts. However, few studies have investigated how information technology (IT) capabilities promote organizational resilience. To fill this gap, we draw on the IT capabilities literature and social capital theory to build a theoretical model to investigate the impact of IT capabilities on organizational resilience. Th…

  • Waning and waxing

Open Access•Man Lu, Lu Man et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics 語言暨語言學•2024

This paper provides a preliminary description of the comparative construction in Tujia 1 (northern dialect; NT), an endangered ergative Tibeto-Burman (TB) language spoken in China, in the context of the typologically diverse ways in which comparative meaning is expressed. In mono-clauses in NT, comparative marking depends on the position of the standard (i.e., that which is compared to). The standard may be marked with an ablative marker, or a to…

  • The multiple functions of the reflexive pronoun in Tujia

Open Access•Man Lu, Lu Man et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman…•2024

This paper investigates the functions of the reflexive pronoun ko 53 to 21 / to 21 in Tujia, a Tibeto-Burman (TB) language. Apart from being used as a verb object, the reflexive pronoun in Tujia can be used as an intensifier, indicating “self, non-other”, but it can also be used to create “passive” or “causative” meaning. It is argued that both meanings created by the reflexive pronoun can be accounted for under a decomposition approach. Verbal r…

  • The serial verb construction in Tujia

Open Access•Man Lu, Lu Man et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman…•2023

This paper presents a comprehensive description of the serial verb construction (henceforth SVC) in Tujia. It shows that serial verbs or verb phrases in Tujia are linked by the particle lie 55 . lie 55 does not contribute any semantic content to the construction, but only functions as a linking particle. lie 55 is not used for any other purpose in any other structure. SVCs in Tujia can be classified into two types: non-symmetric and symmetric, de…

  • Polygrammaticalization

    Man Lu•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2022

The present paper presents a descriptive and analytical account of the various functions of the morpheme ko in Miluo, a Xiang variety of Chinese. This morpheme is used as a classifier, genitive, possessive, pronominal, relative clause marker, nominalizer and as a sentence-final stance-marking marker. We also illustrate the use of ko as a demonstrative pronoun and prenominal topic marker. We discuss these functions in the light of the diachronic d…

  • A structural account of the difference between achievements and accomplishments

Open Access•Man Lu, Anikó Lipták et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2019

This paper offers an analysis of ka 41 , an aspectual element in Changsha Xiang Chinese. It is argued that this element occupies a position in the inner-aspectual structure of the clause, between the higher aspectual marker ta 21 and the lower elements expressing a lexical result (like clean in wash clean ). On the basis of its co-occurrence with various verb types, we treat ka 41 as an achievement marker: when present, it blocks any reading in w…
