  • Another Look at Velar Lenition and Tonogenesis in Jabem

    Joel Bradshaw•ARTICLE•Oceanic Linguistics•1998

Malcolm Ross's account of tonogenesis in Jabem (his Yabem), an Austronesian language in the Huon Gulf region of Papua New Guinea, ends with a diachronic puzzle ... namely that in certain cases where PHG [Proto-Huon Gulf] *y is reconstructible, Yabem has high (I993:147). Elsewhere (1988:132-I60, 418-419; 1993:143-144), Ross reconstructs PHG *y as the lenis reflex of Proto-Oceanic (POc) *k and (nonfminal) *q to account for correspondences between g…

  • Subject Relationships within Serial Verb Constructions in Numbami and Jabem

    Joel Bradshaw•ARTICLE•Oceanic Linguistics•1993

This paper outlines the evidence for verb serialization in Numbami, an Austronesian language of Papua New Guinea, noting parallels with Jabem. The paper then focusses on subject relationships within serial verb constructions in Numbami and Jabem. These two languages allow not only the same subject and switch-subject serialization, but also verbal-subject serialization. In addition, Jabem allows a fourth possibility: ambient-subject serialization.
