  • A Markov Mixed-Effect Multinomial Logistic Regression Model for Nominal Repeated Measures with an Application to Syntactic Self-Priming Effects

    Sun-Joo Cho, Sun‐Joo Cho et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2021

Syntactic priming effects have been investigated for several decades in psycholinguistics and the cognitive sciences to understand the cognitive mechanisms that support language production and comprehension. The question of whether speakers prime themselves is central to adjudicating between two theories of syntactic priming, activation-based theories and expectation-based theories. However, there is a lack of a statistical model to investigate t…

  • Reading relative clauses in English

    Open Access•Edward Gibson, Timothy Desmet et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Linguistics•2005•Citada por: 12•Referências: 3

Two self-paced reading experiments investigated several factors that influence the comprehension complexity of singly-embedded relative clauses (RCs) in English. Three factors were manipulated in Experiment 1, resulting in three main effects. First, object-extracted RCs were read more slowly than subject-extracted RCs, replicating previous work. Second, RCs that were embedded within the sentential complement of a noun were read more slowly than c…

  • The relationship between intonational phrasing and syntactic structure in language production

Duane G Watson, Duane Watson et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Cognitive Processes•2004

In this paper, we evaluate several theories of how syntactic/semantic structure influences the placement of intonational boundaries in language production (Cooper & Paccia-Cooper, 1980; Gee & Grosjean, 1983; Ferreira, 1988). Although the theories that we tested are shown to be quite successful, they are complex, and furthermore, they are incompatible with recent evidence for incrementality in sentence production. In light of these problems, we pr…
