  • ‘Arrive’ ‘to’ ‘achieve’

Open Access•Siyu Wang, Xuhui Hu•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2025

  • Acculturative stress, loneliness, smartphone addiction, L2 emotions, and creativity among international students in China

Open Access•Jian Gao, Dan Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

These findings support the Dual Pathway to Creativity Model and suggest that long-term moods (e.g., acculturative stress) and situational emotions (e.g., FLE and FLCA) may differentially affect creativity, aligning with the Hierarchical Model of Affect, Mood, and Emotion, advancing the understanding of international students' cross-cultural adaptation in the digital age

  • Multifunctionality and contextual realization

    Open Access•Xuhui Hu, J Joseph Perry•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2025•References: 44

This paper aims to make a contribution to the study of the nature of syntactic categories by analysing a single element in a single language, namely the marker -lao in Yixing Chinese. Although this marker has previously been analysed as an adjectivaliser (Hu and Perry 2018), we show that it has a much broader range of uses. We suggest that the bulk of cases can be captured in a unified way by supposing that the marker in question displays a type …

  • Pragmatic ellipsis and its pragmatic consequences

Yifan Chen, Xuhui Hu•ARTICLE•East Asian Pragmatics•2024

This article focuses on the chunk ye shi (literally “also be”) in Chinese. Ye is a contrastive focus marker, yet in some ye shi sentences, there is no overt alternative for contrast. Besides, these sentences carry specific pragmatic implicatures. We propose that these sentences do not form a challenge to ye’s status as a contrastive focus marker. Ye has two core properties: (1) it presupposes the existence of alternatives to contrast with the foc…

  • Bundling telicity, verbal quantification, and perfective aspect

    Open Access•Xuhui Hu•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2023•Cited by: 1

This paper investigates the properties of a particle, lǝ , in Yixing Chinese that invariably denotes telic reading, obligatorily fronts definite and bare NP objects to the topic position, and imposes past event reading in most situations. It is argued that lǝ is a functional item bearing a quantity feature in the sense of Borer (2005b) and is hence responsible for telicity. Following Partee et al. (1987), Partee (1990), Filip (1997) and Borer (20…

  • On the micro-foundations of corporate social responsibility

    Open Access•Yantai Chen, Yanlin Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Cross Cultural & Strategic…•2022•References: 17

Purpose This study proposes that the three core underpinnings of dynamic managerial capabilities (DMCs) – managerial cognition, managerial human capital and managerial social capital – represent individual-level micro-foundations that influence corporate social responsibility (CSR). It further explores the interaction mechanism between the three underpinnings in influencing CSR, and their influence depends on the technological turbulence caused b…

  • Same Root, Different Categories

    Xuhui Hu•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2022•References: 31

The complexity of the directional construction in Chinese involves the following factors: (a) it can take a single directional item as the predicate; (b) two directional items can cooccur to serve as the predicate; (c) one or two directional items can be attached to a matrix verb in a single clause; (d) if more than one directional item is involved, their linear order can differ. I propose that the leading factor behind this complexity is that in…
