  • Grammatical Innovations in German in Multilingual Namibia: The Expanded Use of Linking Elements and Gehen ‘Go’ as a Future Auxiliary

Open Access•Sheena Shah, Christian Zimmer•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2023

In this paper, we provide an overview of the history and sociolinguistic setting of Germans and German in Namibia, which serves as a backdrop for our discussion of two grammatical innovations in Namibian German. German has been actively used in Namibia since the 1880s, having been brought to the country through colonization, and it remains linguistically vital today. Via a questionnaire study, we investigate the expanded use of two grammatical in…

  • Siedlungsgeschichte und Varietätenkontakt: Zur Entstehung des Namdeutschen

    Christian Zimmer•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und…•2021

This paper examines the role of dialect contact in the emergence of Namdeutsch (i. e. a variety of German spoken by about 20 000 Namibians today). In order to show that German speakers of different regional origins interacted with each other in the former colony of German South West Africa, a concrete setting is reconstructed on the basis of historical sources and information on geographic distributions of surnames. Subsequently, it is shown that…

  • The sound of gender - correlations of name phonology and gender across languages

    Open Access•Tanja Ackermann, Christian Zimmer•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 33

Our article is dedicated to the relation of a given name's phonological structure and the gender of the referent. Phonology has been shown to play an important role with regard to gender marking on a name in some (Germanic) languages. For example, studies on English and on German have shown in detail that female and male names have significantly different phonological structures. However, little is known whether these phonological patterns are va…

  • Bei einem Glas guten Wein(es): Der Abbau des partitiven Genitivs und seine Reflexe im Gegenwartsdeutschen

    Christian Zimmer•ARTICLE•Beiträge zur Geschichte der…•2015

This paper is concerned with the loss of the partitive genitive (e. g. ein Glas Weines > ein Glas Wein ) in German, focusing on the early stage of the decline, i. e. the ENHG period, and on variation in present-day German (e. g. einem Glas gutem Wein vs. einem Glas guten Wein ). On the basis of data collected in a questionnaire study and in corpora (both contemporary and historic) it is proposed that formal properties of the inflectional suffixes…

  • All Films Are Political

Christian Zimmer, Lee Leggett•ARTICLE•SubStance•1974•Cited by: 1

The polemic initiated between Cinethique and Les Cahiers du Cinema involves, like most polemics, a few ridiculous and paltry aspects that we won't even mention. Its very origins, from what the arguments of the two reviews allow us to guess about them, seem too obscure and ignoble (fear of competition at Les Cahiers? Ill humor on the part of Cin'thique faced with publication by Les Cahiers of Eisenstein's theoretical writings; and the adoption by …
