Describing English Constructions
Constructing Constructions for an English ConstructiCon or a ConstructiCon for English Constructions
This article provides an account of the different types of information that are used to characterize constructions in the approach taken in Herbst, Thomas, and Thomas Hoffmann. 2024. A Construction Grammar of the English Language. CASA – A Constructionist Approach to Syntactic Analysis . Amsterdam, Philadelphia: Benjamins. and the CASA|Con constructiCon. The most important types of information are those that characterize the construction as such …
High and low level constructions in dictionaries and constructiCons
After outlining the concept of a constructiCon and discussing the relationship of lexicography and constructicography, the focus of this article lies on the CASA ConstruCtiCon project for the English language. The treatment of different types of constructions in CASA|Con is discussed such as argument structure constructions, sentence type constructions, and tense and aspect constructions. In contrast to such constructions at a high level of abstr…
How Collostructional Analysis Contributes to the Description of Argument Structure Constructions with Slots for that- and Infinitive Clauses
This article analyses two English constructions, the monotransitive that -cl construction and the np+ to- infinitive construction . In particular, we will show how the principles of collostructional analysis can be used to establish collo-profiles for argument structure constructions, i.e. the verbs to be found very frequently in a construction, and how such collo-profiles can provide important cues for a semantic characterization of these constr…
Strategies of fair lexicography – how present-day dictionaries of English show respect
This article investigates the ways in which present-day monolingual dictionaries of the English language show respect towards groups of people. On the basis of the analysis of selected entries of the most recent editions of English learners’ dictionaries and the Concise Oxford Dictionary we outline five different strategies employed in these dictionaries to avoid discrimination of and offensiveness towards other people. The analysis comprises the…
Diachronic Construction Grammar – Introductory Remarks to This Special Issue
Mariusz Piotr Kamiński. Defining with Simple Vocabulary in English Dictionaries
This book must be the most thorough and comprehensive up-to-date account of restricted vocabularies of the English language. In the Introduction, the author formulates six research questions, which partly aim at the design of different restricted vocabularies, and, partly focus on the effectiveness of definitions based on restricted vocabularies. Chapter 1 traces the development of restricted vocabularies back to the 17th century and outlines imp…
The nice-of-you construction and its fragments
This article argues that a usage-based construction (a conventional pairing of form and function) is required to account for a certain pattern of English exemplified by e.g., it’s nice of you to read this . Contemporary corpus and survey data reveal that the construction is strongly associated with certain adjectives (e.g., nice, good ) over others, while diachronic data demonstrate that the construction’s overall frequency has systematically wax…
Blending is creative, but blendedness is not — a response to Mark Turner
This short response to Mark Turner’s article on “Construction and creativity” takes the idea of blending — which is at the centre of Turner’s argument — a step further and shows how it can be applied to syntactic analysis. Furthermore, it distinguishes between blendedness and blending, discussing the relevance of these concepts with respect to their relevance with respect to linguistic creativity
What Film Translation can Tell us About the Creation of Meaning, the Role of Accents and Gestures – A Few Essayistic Remarks About Multimodality
This article aims to illustrate some aspects of film dubbing that are of interest to research in cognition and in particular to cognitive linguistics. Dubbed films contain unavoidable discrepancies between the lip movements and (other) gestures perceived visually and the sounds that are heard. Widening the scope to the issue of different accents of speakers, it is argued that multimodal construction grammar should investigate all modes of meaning…
Constructions, generalizations, and the unpredictability of language
Attempts at predicting syntactic behavior from semantic or other generalizations are often unsatisfactory. It is argued that the notion of competition as used by Goldberg (2019) can serve as an explanation for unpredictability in language because established formulations that are preferred over others automatically distort the collocational profiles of verbs in argument structure constructions. As a consequence of this, an approach of seeing item…
Constructicons – a new type of reference work
Towards a valency and argument structure constructicon of English
This article describes the project of a Valency Constructicon, i. e. a constructicon that covers low level valency constructions of individual verbs and links them to more general argument structure constructions. It will be shown how the Erlangen Valency Patternbank can be converted into a constructicon. The project is intended to develop a new type of reference work, but at the same time it can be seen as a test case for constructionist theory …

Valency
In recent years, research on valency has led to important insights into the nature of language. Some of these findings are published in this volume for the first time with up-to-date accounts of language description and new reflections on language, above all for English and German. The volume also presents examples of contrastive analysis, which are of use for all those who deal professionally with these two languages. Furthermore, the articles i…
On the way to the perfect learners' dictionary
1995 has seen the publication of three new editions of English learners' dictionaries (OALD5, LDOCE3 and COBUILD2) and of a completely new dictionary of this genre (CIDE). In this article, these four dictionaries are examined with respect to definitions, valency information, example policies and access structure; etc. Two general conclusions can be drawn: firstly, the systematic exploitation of computer corpora has definitely left its mark on thi…
How obligatory are obligatory complements? — An alternative approach to the categorization of subjects and other complements in valency grammar
Dans cet article, l'A. propose une description de l'anglais a travers la theorie de la valence. Il montre que la distinction entre complement obligatoire et optionnel est une idealisation qui doit etre interpretee d'une maniere prototypique plutot que categorielle. Plus particulierement, il remet en question la supposition largement repandue selon laquelle les sujets doivent etre classes comme complements obligatoires, et tente d'esquisser une ap…

The distinction between complements and peripheral elements, which is made in valency theory, applies not only to verbs and adjectives but also to nouns (cf.
