Property and Prophets: The Evolution of Economic Institutions and Ideologies
"Property and Prophets" is a concise history of the rise and subsequent triumph of capitalism. Focused primarily on England until 1800 and the United States since 1800, the book's economic history is interspersed with the history of ideas that evolved along with the capitalist system
The normative foundations of social theory: An essay on the criteria defining social economics
All economic theorists believe their theories to be oriented toward explanations of human economic behavior. And since human beings are always and everywhere found only in social groups, all econom
Transformation Problem
The ‘transformation problem’ is at the heart of the Marxian labour theory of value. The topic has always been the subject of sharp controversy. The controversy reflects not only the general ideological conflicts that surround all Marxist ideas, but also the disagreement among Marxists themselves about the nature of the labour theory of value. After defining the problem in Marx’s terms, we first present Marx’s solution and the claims which he make…

Controlling power in the social economy: A socialist approach
It remains a question that we cannot at present answer with certainty. As long as the question remains unanswered, the pursuit of socialism will remain the only extant version of the enlightenment humanist vision of people freely and rationally controlling their own lives. And if the preponderance of evidence should convince us all that the authoritarian personality is indeed inherent in human nature, the death of that humanist vision would be, I…

Marx's Concept of Human Nature and the Labor Theory of Value
It is shown that Marx's concept of human nature underlies not only his analysis of alienation but also his broad outlines of the nature of social evolution; his basic concepts of capital, wage labor, and money. It is argued that all of these diverse strands of his theory are intellectually integrated by means of the labor theory of value. It is the author's opinion that this makes the labor theory of value the heart of Marx's entire analysis; wit…

The Importance of Thorstein Veblen for Contemporary Marxism
Abram L. Harris began his comparison of Veblen and Marx with this statement: The contribution of Thorstein Veblen to economic thought bears a striking resemblance to the body of doctrine elaborated by Karl Marx.' Yet, Harris went on to argue, despite numerous similarities the basic theoretical core of Veblen's system could not be made compatible with Marxism without infusing it with certain fundamentally Marxian assumptions which are not accepted…

In an essay in the December 1978 issue of the Review of Social Economy [Hunt, 1978, pp. 285-309], I suggested that the criteria for defining social economics should focus on whether the economic theor? ist gives importance to the fact that in any actual, concrete, empirical situation, economic behavior is an intersection of the innate traits of human nature ? universal human needs, potential for development, and degree of malleability ? and the p…

capitalism has been the subject of long and heated debate among historians. The dominant view has been that of Henri Pirenne,1 which considers the disintegration of feudalism to be primarily the result of the operation of forces external to that society. Canal Irrigation and Local Social Organization [and Comments and Reply]
Theory linking labor inputs of irrigation agriculture to social organization is briefly reviewed. Labor input is distinguished into five tasks: construction, maintenance, allocation, conflict resolution, and organization of ritual. A sample of world communities is canvassed in search of structural variation. A rationale for studying these phenomena in a local, rather than a society-wide, context is presented. Types of ties of the locality with th…

Orthodox Economic Theory and Capitalist Ideology
Many socialists see the development of orthodox economic theory in the capitalist world of the last 150 years as the unfolding of an increasingly intricately worked out ideological exercise. By introducing complicated models of mathematical reasoning, orthodox economists have made it difficult if not impossible for all but the professional economist to follow the tortuous paths by which they arrive at the conclusions which buttress the pillars of…

A Neglected Aspect of the Economic Ideology of the Early New Deal
An entire generation of liberal historians has reached a general con? sensus which regards the accomplishments of the New Deal as a water? shed constituting a qualitative dividing line in American history. These historians generally picture the Roosevelt administration as marking the end of the passive dominated by big business interests and the beginning of the interventionist state. The new interventionist is seen as an important curb on the co…
