    The Chinese leaders' decision to repress the protest at Tiananmen Square in April-June 1989 is analyzed through their symbolic definition of the protest.     This article analyzes pervasive political corruption in the People's Republic of China today, based on a collection of 275 media reports from 1977 to 1980. First, a description of the types of corruption, the characteristics of corruptors, and the urban-rural concentration of corruption is presented.     The context, ideology, and personality of four Chinese Commuist leftists (Mao Tse-tung, Chiang Ch'ing, Chang Ch'ung-ch'iao, and Yao Wen-yuan) are analyzed in depth. Three contextual factors that gave rise to the leftists are: alienation of Mao from the Communist Party, anxiety of a group of middle-level propagandists about the post-Mao era, and disaffection of the public.
