  • Shifting Power in Maine

Open Access•Susan Leigh Foster, Teresa Doksum et al.•ARTICLE•The Foundation Review•2021•References: 1

Between 2013 and 2019, a Maine Health Access Foundation community-based initiative provided place-based funding to communities to address system gaps and inefficiencies that impede the ability of Maine’s most vulnerable individuals to obtain essential services and supports. To rebalance power between the funder and grantees, the foundation introduced grantmaking practices such as long-term, flexible funding and new ways of relating to and support…

  • Valuing Dance

    Susan Leigh Foster•BOOK•Valuing Dance•2019

Because dance materializes through and for people, because we learn to dance from others and often present dance to others, the moment of its transmission is one of dance's central and defining features. 'Valuing Dance' looks at the occasion when dancing passes from one person to another as an act of exchange, one that is redolent with symbolic meanings, including those associated with its history and all the labour that has gone into its making.…

  • Why Is There Always Energy for Dancing

    Open Access•Susan Leigh Foster•ARTICLE•Dance Research Journal•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 19

This essay undertakes to illuminate the work of Randy Martin by surveying a range of theories offering hypothetical answers to the question of why dance seems to generate more energy than it demands, an experience often reported by those who engage in it. Coming from the disparate disciplines of social history, psychology, neurobiology, phenomenology, and aesthetics, these theories do not necessarily conflict with one another nor do they agree ab…

  • Movement after Randy Martin

Patricia Ticineto Clough, André Lepecki et al.•ARTICLE•Social Text•2015

This section collects a series of short reflections on the life, camaraderie, and scholarship of Randy Martin, a longtime member of the Social Text editorial collective. In place of definitive, authoritative analyses of Martin's work, these pieces present a montage of personal snapshots by people that collaborated, moved, thought, wrote, edited, and learned with him

  • Improvising Yoga

Susan Leigh Foster, George E Lewis et al.•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Critical…•2014

This chapter explores improvisation during the practice of yoga as a way to consider Foucault’s concept of “techniques of the self.” It describes and analyzes the way that the thinking body and the thinking mind can improvise together to construct a corporeality that resists the docilization of the body that is exerted through advertising, fitness, and health regimens. It thereby contributes to the investigation of improvisation and the politics …

  • Choreographies of Protest

    Susan Leigh Foster•ARTICLE•Theatre Journal•2003•Cited by: 40•References: 4

This essay reconstructs nonviolent protest during three moments in recent US history-the lunch counter sit-ins of 1960, the ACT-UP die-ins of the late 1980s, and the Seattle WTO protests in 1999, asking of them the kinds of questions that a dance scholar might pose. By showing how bodies make articulate choices based on their intelligent assessment of other bodies, the essay frames a new perspective on individual agency and collective action

For Rainer, the significance of Cage's contribution to art has nothing to do with allowing viewers to comprehend the excellence of as Cage himself suggests. Instead, Rainer heralds Cage's work because it undermines the determinate and hierarchical organization of meaning in the world of art and in the world, and thereby provides techniques for assessing the ideological functioning of the message, You are leading an excellent life, as one message …
