  • Earnest

    Open Access•Emily Eells•ARTICLE•Cahiers victoriens et édouardiens•2024

Victorian Earnestness‘The one thing, as Macaulay would have put it, which every schoolboy knows about the Victorians is that they were earnest’. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, that means they were ‘serious, not frivolous; showing sincere and intense feeling or conviction; lacking playfulness’. Earnestness is quintessentially Victorian. How could it not but be included in this glossary compiled by the editors of the Cahiers victoriens…

  • Writing the Life of Natalie Clifford Barney's Salon: ‘Le Cercle d'Enchantement Et D'inspiration’

    Open Access•Emily Eells•ARTICLE•Comparative Critical Studies•2021•References: 1

This paper focuses on the expatriate American poet Natalie Clifford Barney and her life as salon hostess in Paris which spanned the sixty-year period from 1908 to 1968. That transnationalism granted her both sexual freedom as a promiscuous lesbian and freedom of speech as an active feminist.…

  • Proust’s Ruskin: From Illustration to Illumination

  • Sargent and Proust: An Elusive Mouvance

Emily Eells, Stephen Coon•ARTICLE•Visual Culture in Britain•2018

Whether John Singer Sargent and Marcel Proust ever met is unknown, but they shared close personal relationships and moved in the same circles. Among those relationships were artists Paul Helleu and Jacques-Émile Blanche; society figures Dr Samuel Pozzi, Comte Robert de Montesquiou and Winnaretta Singer; and musicians Gabriel Fauré, Léon Delafosse and Reynaldo Hahn. The works of the painter and the novelist share other traits: penetrating and inci…

    Emily Eells•ARTICLE•French Studies•2005

Sous la direction de Bernard Brunet Juliette Hassine. Paris, Minard. 292 pp. Pb €21.00. This volume indiscriminately mixes articles illustrating recent developments in Proust studies with papers given at the conference whose title is used as the title for the volume. ‘Proust au tournant des siècles’ thus refers both to the time when Proust was writing as well as to contemporary research on his work. The conference organized by Juliette Hassine an…
