A violent extremist group poses a significant threat to parts of Cabo Delgado province. Since its first major attack in October 2017, it has perpetuated a conflict to the detriment of sections of the population and government, as well as disrupting economic development. Little is known about the group and there is a considerable amount of confusion in policymaking and academic circles about the nature of the violent extremists (VE) and their rela…

  • The Incognito

    Richard Rand, Richard A Rand•ARTICLE•positions asia critique•2018•References: 1

This essay offers a reading of Walter Benjamin’s “The Moderne,” the third section of “The Paris of the Second Empire in Baudelaire.” It begins with an analysis of Baudelaire’s fantastic (or phantasmagoric) images of heroic figures found in Parisian crowds and proceeds to give an account of Benjamin’s analysis of how Baudelaire converts these fantasies into “roles” played by “the poet in Baudelaire,” whom Benjamin calls the “incognito.” By examini…

  • Hysteron Proteron, or ‘Woman First’

    Open Access•Richard Rand•ARTICLE•Oxford Literary Review•1986•Cited by: 1

The term 'Hysteron Proteron' comes to us from classical rhetoric. It refers to a figure of speech, a trope, in which two terms are reversed according to the sequence, the order, temporal, spatial, causal, in which you ordinarily find them. It is a term of language that deliberately places the cart before the horse. Typical examples include precisely the cart before the horse. Another example often cited in dictionaries is the phrase, thunder and …

  • O'Er-Brimm'd

    Open Access•Richard Rand, Richard A Rand•ARTICLE•Oxford Literary Review•1982

That the field of literary criticism seeks to constitute itself as a field, with its own limits, identity and coherence, is readily seen in the manner in which it deploys or disposes of its defining terms, words that we find, or do not find, in the glossaries at the ends of textbooks, such as 'character', 'plot', 'figure', 'meter' or 'genre'. In the grand edifice of literary studies, every term has its place, as guaranteed by a single architecton…
