  • Der Witz und seine Beziehung zur Nachdenklichkeit

    Open Access•Paul Fleming•ARTICLE•Kulturwissenschaftliche Zeitschrift•2025

This article takes Hans Blumenberg’s failure to mention Sigmund Freud in his 1980 Freud-Prize acceptance speech as an occasion to think through the importance of small forms in these two theorists’ work. The essay explores Blumenberg’s theory of »pensiveness« (Nachdenklichkeit) and what it may be missing by ignoring Freud and his notion of the joke (Witz). At stake are the ways Blumenberg and Freud mobilize small forms as modes and methods of thi…

  • Introduction

    Paul Fleming, Cecilia Sebastian•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2025•References: 9

This introduction to the special section "Critical Theory after Frankfurt" reflects on recent demands to reorient Frankfurt School Critical Theory in the wake of its centennial toward the critique of political economy, capitalism, colonialism, militarism, and the climate crisis. It reviews concerns that critics have raised about Jürgen Habermas's inheritance of Critical Theory, and it considers several of the alternative paths proposed for charti…

  • St. Matthew Passion

Hans Blumenberg, Helmut Müller-Sievers et al.•BOOK•St. Matthew Passion•2021

This book is the author's sustained and devastating meditation on Jesus's anguished cry on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Why did this abandonment happen, what does it mean within the logic of the Gospels, how have believers and nonbelievers understood it, and how does it live on in art? The book unfolds context upon context in which this cry has reverberated, from early Christian apologetics and heretics to twentieth-cent…

  • Evaluating Knowledge to Support Climate Action

    Open Access•Richard H Moss, S K Avery et al.•ARTICLE•Weather, Climate, and Society•2019

As states, cities, tribes, and private interests cope with climate damages and seek to increase preparedness and resilience, they will need to navigate myriad choices and options available to them. Making these choices in ways that identify pathways for climate action that support their development objectives will require constructive public dialogue, community participation, and flexible and ongoing access to science- and experience-based knowle…

  • Toward 90-90-90

    Miguel A Carrasco, Paul J Fleming et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

To reach HIV epidemic control it is important to ensure that those who have never been tested access HIV testing and counseling (HTC) particularly in the context of a generalized HIV epidemic. Using data from the 2014 Lesotho Demographic Health Survey bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to determine the associations between never tested for HIV and key socio-cognitive characteristics by sex. Marginal probabilities at th…

  • Tragedy, for Example

    Paul Fleming•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2017•Cited by: 1

This essay examines the status of the example and the exemplary in two senses: first, as the place, function, and value of the literary example in computational humanities; and, second, as the exemplary author, the author that stands in for and represents a much wider school or field. When it comes to digital humanities, Franco Moretti—rightly or wrongly (but this is part of the contested state of examples)—still is “the example.” At stake in the…

This article explores the fate of Hans Blumenberg's work to date in the English-speaking world and asks whether this "missed encounter" is simply contingent-that is, might have been otherwise-or if there is something about his thought, method, and materials that makes his transfer from a German to an American or Anglophone context particularly difficult. Looking at Paradigms for a Metaphorology and The Legitimacy of the Modern Age, the article ex…

  • Secret Germany / Crooked Germany

    Paul Fleming•ARTICLE•Telos•2016

The peculiarity of the German situation since the emancipation of the Jews had been that so far as Judaism creatively or disruptively entered the German language, it always had done so—unlike in France and especially in England—in a progressive, if not revolutionary sense. The circle that formed around Stefan George during the course of the [18]90s offered the Jews for the first time the possibility of placing their conservative tendencies in a f…

  • Belatedness

    Paul Fleming•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2014

Belatedness:A Theory of the Epic Paul Fleming (bio) introduction—belatedness The theory of the epic, following Georg Lukács, comes too late. For Lukács the age of the epic explicitly has no seeking, no philosophy, no questions (only answers), and therefore no theory, not even its own. Thus, the theory of the epic begins when the age of epic has ended—only when epic is a thing of the past does one begin to ask what it was, what questions it may ha…

  • Using machine learning to predict wind turbine power output

Open Access•Andrew Clifton, Levi Kilcher et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

Wind turbine power output is known to be a strong function of wind speed, but is also affected by turbulence and shear. In this work, new aerostructural simulations of a generic 1.5 MW turbine are used to rank atmospheric influences on power output. Most significant is the hub height wind speed, followed by hub height turbulence intensity and then wind speed shear across the rotor disk. These simulation data are used to train regression trees tha…

This article explores the relationship between the previous UK government’s initiative to rebuild and renew secondary schools, and the requirement for improved education for sustainable development in the UK. The documented research utilized a number of mechanisms to engage with pupils in Leicester city schools to increase their awareness, knowledge and understanding of the science and engineering associated with the design and operation of low-e…

  • The perfect story

    Open Access•Paul Fleming•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 13

Hans Blumenberg's work is characterized by a seemingly insatiable predilection for anecdotes - about Thales and Pyrrhus, Goethe and Fontane, Husserl and Wittgenstein, Polgar and Jünger. This essay explores the theoretical status of anecdotes by juxtaposing Carl Linnaeus's Nemesis Divina with Blumenberg's Care Crosses the River, both read alongside Aristotle's notion of exemplarity and Joel Fineman's delineation of the anecdote as the literary-his…

  • Situational influences upon children's beliefs about global warming and energy

    Patrick Devine‐wright, Hannah Devine‐Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 4

This paper explores children's beliefs about global warming and energy sources from a psychological perspective, focusing upon situational influences upon subjective beliefs, including perceived self‐efficacy. The context of the research is one of growing concern at the potential impacts of global warming, yet demonstrably low levels of self‐efficacy amongst both adults and children to effectively respond to this large‐scale environmental problem…

In well-functioning networks all relevant key roles are occupied and played by individuals and organisations in a way that is credible, consistent, legitimate and equitable. As a study of landscapes and perspectives, views and prospects (Aussichten) in the work of Jean Paul, Eckart Goebel's Am Ufer der zweiten Welt is perhaps best read in a Jean Paul fashion: through an inverted lens. The two concluding appendices, when read first, underscore the book's main methodological and theoretical moments, putting the work as a whole into perspective

David Colbourne, Irene Lorenzoni et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999

A study of social attitudes to urban energy management strategies has been undertaken as part of a research project aiming to develop an energy planning tool for urban planners. The study used a social survey to predict attitudinal responses to proposed engineering solutions, namely load management, energy efficiency and alternative supply options (renewable energy). The principal influence on attitude formation, which emerges from the literature…
