  • "Il perché del gioco"

    Open Access•Akash Kumar•ARTICLE•California Italian Studies•2023

This essay considers chess as a particular mode of exchange in Italo Calvino’s Le città invisibili that draws upon the game’s global nature and long history of representing cross-cultural exchange, as seen in the 13th century world that Calvino evokes in the framing of his work as an exchange between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan. This focus lends itself to both an examination of Calvino’s overarching medievalism in his late novel and a look to his …

  • From Lyric Tremors to a Planetary Perspective

    Akash Kumar•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2022

From Lyric Tremors to a Planetary Perspective:An Essay on the Vita Nuova, after Singleton Akash Kumar (bio) "The fiction of the Divine Comedy is that it is not fiction." That line of Charles Singleton, from the first volume of Dante Studies, the 1954 Commedia: Elements of Structure, likely rings in the ears of every modern student of Dante Alighieri at some time or another. It is a great line, and Singleton's remarkable critical output is full of…

  • Levi’s Limbo

    Akash Kumar, Francesco Samarini•ARTICLE•The Italianist•2022

In this article, we draw attention to the expansive and crucial presence of Dante in two particular stories of Primo Levi’s Vizio di forma, the linked tales ‘Lavoro Creativo’ and ‘Nel Parco’. These stories imagine an idyllic afterlife realm for famous literary characters, and so are of course ripe for reading through the lens of Dante’s Limbo. But we argue that there is still more to be found by expanding the scope of our inquiry to more of the C…

  • An evaluation of inter and intra population structure of Uttar Pradesh, inferred from 24 autosomal STRs

Open Access•Ikramul Haque, Shivani Dixit et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2021

Aim The present study was designed to explore the STR diversity and genomic history of the inhabitants of the most populous subdivision of the country. A set of 24 hypervariable autosomal STRs was used to estimate the genetic diversity within the studied population. A panel of 15 autosomal STRs, which is most common in the previously reported data sets, was used to estimate the genetic diversity between the studied population, and obtained unique…

  • Normative development in rural India

    Arathi Sriprakash, R Maithreyi et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Education•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Global education agendas frequently draw on the construct of ‘school readiness’, indexing the developmental trajectories of children to the expectations of school systems. Through in-depth ethnographic research in a village in Bihar, India, this paper examines how normative discourses of ‘school readiness’ govern family strategies for early childhood care and education (ECCE). To navigate the demandsof a competitive and socially stratified school…

  • Project-Based Learning in Embedded Systems Education Using an FPGA Platform

Open Access•Akash Kumar, Shakith Fernando et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2013

With embedded systems becoming ubiquitous, there is a growing need to teach and train engineers to be well-versed in their design and development. The multidisciplinary nature of such systems makes it challenging to give students exposure to and experience in all their facets. This paper proposes a generic architecture, containing multiple processors, that allows easy integration of custom and/or predefined peripherals. The architecture allows st…
