  • The role of meaning in the rivalry of -ity and -ness: Evidence from distributional semantics

    Open Access•Martin Jorg Schafer•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2025

Both -ity and -ness are frequent and productive suffixes in English that fulfill the same core function: turning adjectives into nouns that denote the state or quality of whatever the adjective denotes. This well-known affix rivalry raises two core questions: 1. What determines the choice between -ity and -ness for a given base word? 2. Are the two affixes synonymous? For the first question, previous work has focused on morphological and phonolog…

  • From quick to quick-to - infinitival: On what is lexeme specific across paradigmatic and syntagmatic distributions

    Open Access•Martin Jorg Schafer•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2021

Adjectives are paradigmatically versatile: they combine with many different items in the same syntactic configuration. They are also syntagmatically versatile: they occur in many different syntactic configurations. Given this versatility, how and to what extent can lexeme-specific preferences and features of the adjectives be identified? With the adjective quick as its starting point, this article answers this question by using corpus data, contr…

  • Rhythmos: Formen des Unbeständigen nach Hölderlin

Ulrike Haß, Maud Meyzaud et al.•BOOK•rhythmos•2016

It is well known that in Stifter’s Der Nachsommer the protagonist’s education, the formation of a secluded inter-generational community, and the poetic speech of the novel itself all are to attenuate the human passions, which are conceived as dangerous and destructive. However, the depiction of the protagonist’s visit to a King Lear theater production demonstrates the extent to which the non-educational and non-formational dimensions of the passi…

  • Modelling semantic transparency

    Open Access•Melanie J Bell, Martin Jorg Schafer et al.•ARTICLE•Morphology•2016•Cited by: 8•References: 42

We present models of semantic transparency in which the perceived transparency of English noun–noun compounds, and of their constituent words, is predicted on the basis of the expectedness of their semantic structure. We show that such compounds are perceived as more transparent when the first noun is more frequent, hence more expected, in the language generally; when the compound semantic relation is more frequent, hence more expected, in associ…

  • Positions and Interpretations: German Adverbial Adjectives at the Syntax-Semantics Interface

Martin Jorg Schafer, Martin Schäfer•BOOK•Positions and interpretations•2013

The structural and semantic properties of adverbials represent a still poorly understood area of sentential syntax and semantics in Germanic languages. The volume gives a detailed overview of the system of adverbial adjectives in German, linking the different types of adverbial usages to different syntactic positions and providing formal derivations for the different usages. The book is of interest not only to anyone working on the linguistics of…

  • Event Structures in Linguistic Form and Interpretation

Martin Jorg Schafer, Johannes Dölling et al.•BOOK•Event Structures in Linguistic…•2008

This volume addresses the problem of how language expresses conceptual information on event structures and how such information can be reconstructed in the interpretation process. The papers present important new insights into recent semantic and syntactic research on the topic. The volume deals with the following problems in detail: event structure and syntactic construction, event structure and modification, event structure and plurality, event…

  • Fantasy Realism: Rainald Goetz, Jeff Koons, and the Ethics of Pop Art

    Martin Jorg Schafer•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2006•References: 1

ainald Goetz’s writing seems obsessed with the names of VIPs: time and again, Goetz’s texts employ the names and activities of contemporary real-life persons, be they German or international, academic or yellow-press celebrities, or simply members of the “in“ crowd with whom the real-life person Rainald Goetz is said to hang out. Even the first-person narrator of Goetz’s prose usually goes by the name of Rainald. At one point, Rainald is reproach…

  • Wider den 'Anlas' der Gewalt: Darstellbarbarkeit in Jahnns Flus ohne Ufer

    Martin Jorg Schafer•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2004
