Marilyn Butler, Susan Manly•BOOK•Works of Maria Edgeworth, Part I…•2019

This book is a collection of novels Leonora and Harrington by Maria Edgeworth that address issues of nationalism in an Anglo-Irish context and that will be of much use to scholars, students and general readers interested in fictional works. MARIA EDGEWORTH was born in 1768. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800) was also her first Irish tale. The next such tale was Ennui (1809), after which came The Absentee, which began life as an unstaged play…

  • Mapping Mythologies: Countercurrents in Eighteenth-Century British Poetry and Cultural History

    Marilyn Butler, Heather Glen•BOOK•Mapping Mythologies•2015

In this groundbreaking work of revisionary literary history, Marilyn Butler traces the imagining of alternative versions of the nation in eighteenth-century Britain, both in the works of a series of well-known poets (Akenside, Thomson, Gray, Collins, Chatterton, Macpherson, Blake) and in the differing accounts of the national culture offered by eighteenth-century antiquarians and literary historians. She charts the beginnings in eighteenth-centur…

  • Culture's medium: The Role of the Review

    Open Access•Marilyn Butler•CHAPTER•The Cambridge companion to…•1993

During the last quarter of the twentieth century social historians and historical critics have been cautiously developing a language for studying the arts that breaks out of a narrowly aesthetic vocabulary. We have become interested not so much in literature or art or music, not even in "the arts" altogether, but in a given society's cultural production. The full consequences for our sense of how individual arts or artists operated at any particu…

  • Byron and the Empire in the East

    Marilyn Butler•CHAPTER•Byron•1990

Byron's 200th birthday on 28 January 1988 was dutifully celebrated in the quality media. It must have been either bad form or too troublesome to tackle the real problem he represents, as an apparently major poet whose poetry has in fact been steadily belittled in the English-speaking world. Unlike most writers, whose lives lack incident and variety, Byron makes wonderful journalistic copy. Personable as Princess Di, action-orientated as Bob Geldo…

  • Trends and Differentials in Breast Feeding: An Update

    Open Access•Charles Hirschman, Marilyn Butler•ARTICLE•Demography•1981•Cited by: 23•References: 15

Analysis of the 1973 National Survey of Family Growth shows a continued downward trend in breast feeding by successive cohorts of American mothers. The downward trend is evident in both measures of incidence (ever-breast feeding) and duration of breast feeding for first and higher-order births. For all cohorts higher-order births are less likely to be breast fed than first births. However, breast feeding of higher-order births is typically of a l…
