  • There Is No Cherokee Syllabary at Red Bird River Shelter (15CY52)

    Open Access•Jan F Simek, Beau Duke Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2020•References: 6

Despite new arguments by Tankersley and Weeks that we misinterpreted petroglyph engravings and ignored site formation processes at the Red Bird River Shelter in Kentucky (15CY52), we remain convinced that there is no evidence for Cherokee Syllabary writing at the site. The petroglyphs are clearly not symbols present in any version of the Cherokee Syllabary. There is no empirical evidence for any site formation processes that have altered the shel…

  • The Red Bird River Shelter (15CY52) Revisited

    Open Access•Jan F Simek, Beau Duke Carroll et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article reanalyzes petroglyphs from the Red Bird River Shelter (15CY52), a small sandstone shelter in Kentucky. In 2009-2013, it was claimed that some of the carvings at the site represented the earliest known examples of Cherokee Syllabary writing, dating to the first two decades of the nineteenth century. It was also suggested that Sequoyah, the Cherokee artist and intellectual who invented the Cherokee Syllabary in the early nineteenth ce…

  • Spirituality Self-Care Practices as a Mediator between Quality of Life and Depression

    Open Access•Mary White, Mary L White•ARTICLE•Religions•2016•References: 21

The purpose of this study was to develop a midrange theory, building on Orem's self-care deficit nursing theory (SCDNT) to include constructs of religion, spirituality, and spiritual self-care practices. This mid-range theory, White's theory of spirituality and spiritual self-care (WTSSSC), was developed and tested as part of a larger study of African American patients with heart failure (HF). The aim of the study was to determine if spiritual se…

  • Developing Ethical Awareness in Global Health

Open Access•Mary White, Mary T White et al.•ARTICLE•Developing World Bioethics•2014

In recent years, the growth of interest in global health among medical students and residents has led to an abundance of short‐term training opportunities in low‐resource environments. Given the disparities in resources, needs and expectations between visitors and their hosts, these experiences can raise complex ethical concerns. Recent calls for best practices and ethical guidelines indicate a need for the development of ethical awareness among …

  • The Dates of the Orthagorids

    Mary White•ARTICLE•Phoenix•1958

One of the earlier and more brilliant of the Greek tyrannies was that of the Orthagorids at Sicyon. It lasted for a whole century, which established a record for this somewhat unstable form of government. Of the founder and eponym Orthagoras, and of his immediate successors, we know very little, but its most distinguished figure, Cleisthenes, a contemporary of Solon at Athens, played a major role in the First Sacred War and made little Sicyon one…
