War and Religion
War and Religion: A Very Short Introduction traces the history of religion and war. Is religion a force for war or a force for peace? From the crusades to Sri Lanka's civil war, religion has been involved in some of the most terrible wars in history. Yet from the Mahabharata to just war theory, religion has also provided ethical frameworks to moderate war, while some of the bravest pacifists have been deeply religious people. Ranging from ancient…

From Morality Tales to Horror Movies
In this chapter, the author focuses on three components of West African video film: the audience, the film producer and films themselves. This is in order to investigate why these video films have displaced Hollywood productions that dominate in so many other parts of the world. As morality tales these films therefore play a vital social role, and are used by many women as a way of showing their partners the right way of living. Recent Hollywood …

Martyrdom
Martyrdom: A Very Short Introduction provides a historical analysis of the concept of martyrdom to shed light on how it has evolved and the different ways in which it is used today. A sharply contested term and act, martyrdom has a long history of provoking controversy. Suicide attacks have made recurring questions about martyrdom more pertinent to current discussions. What is martyrdom? Why are some people drawn towards giving up their lives as …
Portraying Forgiveness through Documentary Film
At the heart of this article is an analysis of two documentary films that focus on the topic of forgiveness, one in Rwanda, in the wake of the 1994 genocide, and the other in northern Uganda, following the ravages of the Lord's Resistance Army. This essay includes a description of the production background of both films, a brief outline of the historical context in which they are set, and a more detailed examination of both documentaries. Special…

In this article I investigate how the web was used for expressing non-violent resistance in the wake of the July 2005 bombings in London. I first describe how one website, entitled “We are not afraid,” became a space for displaying and viewing responses to these attacks. My contention is that, to describe this phenomenon either as the creation of a fully fledged online community or simply as an electronic noticeboard is to oversimplify what is bo…
Criteria of daily newspaper quality — editors' and educators' views
In a two-wave mall survey, 1 675 daily newspaper managing editors or their equivalents and 381 members of the AEJ Newspaper Division were asked what they considered the criteria for quality in a daily newspaper. Based on the authors' expectations, hypotheses falling into four general categories were posited: hypotheses relating to content, papers' characteristics, appearance and resources. The authors found that editors emphasized criteria relate…
