‘The Store’ Oral History Project
The Store Oral History Project is a collection of 20 oral histories gathered from members of the Newcastle community in 2019, sharing their thoughts and memories of the Newcastle and Suburban Co-operative Society Ltd, known locally as ‘The Store’. The project builds on existing knowledge about ‘The Store’ that was the biggest and most successful co-operative society in Australia, established in 1898. In 1974, at its peak it operated 15 other reta…
Conspirituality and the web
Recent scholarship, notably that of Charlotte Ward and David Voas (2011), has developed the category of conspirituality to describe the contemporary melding online of New Age beliefs and conspiracy theories. This article seeks to interrogate the premise that conspirituality is primarily web-based through an examination of the media practices of leading UK-based conspiritualist David Icke. It argues that conspirituality operates through a synergis…

Pleasure, disaffection, ‘conversion’ or rejection? The (limited) role of prefiguration in shaping audience engagement and response
This article examines the extent to which prefigurative ‘horizons of expectations’ shaped audience engagements with Peter Jackson’s 2012 film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ( AUJ). Whereas previous research often focuses on examining prefigurative materials, discussions and debates themselves, this article draws on audience surveys conducted before and after the film’s release to illustrate the impact of prior hopes and expectations on post-vi…
Hidden gods—Religion, spirituality and recent New Zealand cinema
The shift in English-language film towards representing spirituality rather than religion is enriched in Aotearoa New Zealand by the popularity of films made by Māori writers and/or directors which draw on a broad set of characteristics popularly known as ‘Māori spirituality’. The paradigmatic film of this type is Whale Rider (Caro, 2003) but this article considers three more recent movies, Boy (Waititi 2009), The Strength of Water (Ballantyne, 2…
