Weber and the Ethics of Contemporary Technology
This article connects prominent debates within the ethical literature on self-driving cars to themes explored in the work of Max Weber. I will draw on Weber's analyses of how modern scientific and technical advancements have destabilized traditional moral value claims, and of how the spread of highly specialized forms of technical expertise has impacted the development of responsibility for the outputs of modern organizations. I will link these a…

I don’t think that means what you think it means
ISSUE: Medical educators share the belief that fostering the development of lifelong learning skills is a fundamental task for teachers and learners in all stages of a physician's education: undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and continuing medical education. The morality of fighting inequality
Dethroning Deliberation
This critical reply addresses William Caspary’s commentary on my use of John Dewey to elevate the theory of participatory democracy above deliberative democracy within contemporary democratic thought. In this reply I will defend my reading of Dewey against Caspary’s claim that Dewey is not the supporter of “nondeliberative” direct action that I take him to be. I will also explore the similarities and differences between my and Caspary’s views on …

The Impossibility of Touching
This short story explores the interaction between voyeurism, music, gender roles, the impossibility of touching, and the attempt to arrest time in Werner Schroeter’s 1972 film The Death of Maria Malibran. It dramatizes the space generated by looking at the film’s unusual tableaus as part of a theater audience and fictionally details the production itself and the creative impulses of its director
Dividing Deliberative and Participatory Democracy through John Dewey
This article challenges the prevalent interpretation of John Dewey as a forefather of deliberative democracy, and shows how Dewey's theory can help turn democratic theory toward participatory democracy, which is widely seen as having been incorporated by deliberative democracy. I argue that Dewey would find deliberative principles to be abstracting from our unequal social conditions by attempting to bracket the unequal social statuses that indivi…
The Resolution of Poverty in Hegel’s “Actual” State
This article presents a Hegelian argument in favor of measures for reducing poverty that go beyond typical welfare policies. Most commentators argue that either (1) Hegel’s system must tolerate poverty (as part of the state preserving the autonomy of civil society), or (2) Hegel provides for the welfare of the poor through the civil-society institutions of the “corporations” and the “police.” According to Hegel’s dialectical method, however, the …
