  • “It’s a lifeline”

Anne Gracy, Aislinn Woody et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2025

The use of health technology, such as telehealth and mobile health used to support or deliver health care, is a promising strategy to improve HIV outcomes among people with HIV (PWH) in the rural South. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 HIV care providers in rural Florida to understand the perspectives and experiences of using health technology to deliver care for PWH. Thematic analysis was applied. Emerging themes were organized under f…

  • Three-Year Follow-up of PositiveLinks

Open Access•Catherine Bielick, Chelsea E Canan et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

PositiveLinks (PL) is a mHealth platform to support care engagement by people with HIV (PWH). Daily reminders prompt the user to report medication adherence, mood, and daily stress. Higher response rate to PL check-ins has been associated with better suppression of viral load over 6-18 months. We conducted a retrospective chart review for a three-year period collecting demographic information, average mood and stress scores, and all viral loads o…

  • Reliving it All Over Again

    J Burraway, Bailey Helbert et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2023•References: 53

Clinicians typically view the intersection between hepatitis C and injection drug use in terms of simultaneity - with transmission occurring via shared needles - or sequentially - with some states requiring that people stop using drugs prior to treatment. Yet, for patients, the connection between substance use and HCV infection can follow a more complex temporal pathway. In this article, we explore the non-linear temporality of "reliving" as it s…

  • Influences on catch-up growth using relative versus absolute metrics

    Open Access•Stephanie A Richard, Benjamin J J Mccormick et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The study children demonstrated improved growth from 24 to 60 months of age, but only a subset had positive changes in HAD and WAD. The same environmental factors were associated with growth from 24 to 60 months regardless of metric used (change in HAZ or HAD, or WAZ and WAD)

  • PositiveLinks and the Covid-19 Response

Open Access•Breanna R Campbell, Sabrina Swoger et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2021

PositiveLinks (PL) is an evidence-based mobile health intervention promoting engagement in care for people living with HIV. PL offers secure, in-app patient-provider messaging. We investigated messaging during the early COVID-19 pandemic, comparing messages exchanged between 01/13/2020 and 03/01/2020 ("Pre-COVID") to messages exchanged between 03/02/2020 and 04/19/2020 ("early COVID") using Poisson regression. We performed qualitative analysis on…

  • A Geospatial Bibliometric Review of the HIV/Aids Epidemic in the Russian Federation

Open Access•Megan E Gray Neils, Herman Pfaeffle et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

Background: Increasing rates of HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia contrast global trends, but the scope of HIV/AIDS research originating from RF and countries of the former Soviet Union (FSU) has not been quantified or comparatively examined. Methods: We searched six major scientific databases in Russian and English languages with medical subject heading terms “HIV” or “AIDS” and “Russia” or “Soviet Union” from 1991 to 2016. Each abstra…

  • Addressing Stigma Through a Virtual Community for People Living with HIV

Open Access•Tabor Flickinger, Claire DeBolt et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2018

Stigma has negative consequences for quality of life and HIV care outcomes. PositiveLinks is a mobile health intervention that includes a secure anonymous community message board (CMB). We investigated discussion of stigma and changes in stigma scores. Of 77 participants in our pilot, 63% were male, 49% Black, and 72% had incomes below the federal poverty level. Twenty-one percent of CMB posts (394/1834) contained stigma-related content including…

  • Social Support in a Virtual Community

Open Access•Tabor Flickinger, Claire DeBolt et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2016

  • The syndemics of childhood diarrhoea

    Open Access•Nicola Bulled, M Singer et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2014

Diarrhoea remains the second leading cause of death in children under 5 years. Moreover, morbidity as a result of diarrhoea is high particularly in marginalised communities. Frequent bouts of diarrhoea have deleterious and irreversible effects on physical and cognitive development. Children are especially vulnerable given their inability to mount an active immune response to pathogen exposure. Biological limitations are exacerbated by the long-te…

  • Development of a Spatial and Temporal Agent-Based Model for Studying Water and Health Relationships

Open Access•Jeffrey Demarest, Sheree Pagsuyoin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2013

Diarrhea, the second leading cause of child morbidity and mortality, can have detrimental effects in the physical and cognitive development of children in developing countries. Health interventions (e.g., increased access to health services and safe water) designed to address this problem are difficult to implement in resource-limited settings. In this paper, we present a tool for understanding the complex relationship between water and public he…
