  • Tracing the evolution of the gender of “Covid-19” in the French of three continents

Open Access•Michael Dow, Patrick Drouin•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2023

In this article, we document the gender of the noun “COVID-19” in a database of more than 76,000 tweets and in traditional media (approximately 500,000 articles) in French as spoken in Africa, (North) America and Europe. We find that North American media comply near-categorically with the recommendations of the feminine by the World Health Organization and local linguistic authorities in March 2020. The majority of North American tweets follow su…

  • Automatic extraction of specialized verbal units

Nizar Ghazzawi, Benoît Robichaud et al.•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2017

This paper presents a methodology for the automatic extraction of specialized Arabic, English and French verbs of the field of computing. Since nominal terms are predominant in terminology, our interest is to explore to what extent verbs can also be part of a terminological analysis. Hence, our objective is to verify how an existing extraction tool will perform when it comes to specialized verbs in a given specialized domain. Furthermore, we want…

  • Creating a test corpus for term extractors through term annotation

    Gabriel Bernier-Colborne, Patrick Drouin•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2014

In this paper, we describe a methodology used to create a test corpus for the evaluation of term extractors. This methodology relies on term annotation: terms in a corpus on automotive engineering are selected based on specific criteria pertaining to the terminological setting as well as linguistic and formal properties of terms and term variations. The test corpus accounts for the variety of ways in which terms are realized in running text, and …

  • Hybridité et variation dans les SMS

Open Access•Hélène Blondeau, Mireille Tremblay et al.•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2014

This article presents an analysis of a Montreal French corpus of text messages and considers the link between text messaging, and both spoken and written language. This corpus is part of a larger corpus of text messages sent by mobile phone (Texto4-Science). Our study focuses on two morphosyntactic variables for which an important sociostylistic variation has been reported in Montreal French: the alternation between the strong pronouns nous/nous …

  • Automating the compilation of specialized dictionaries

    Annaïch Le Serrec, Marie-Claude L’homme et al.•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2010

In this paper, we study how single-word term extraction and bilingual lexical alignment can be used and combined to assist terminologists when they compile bilingual specialized dictionaries. Two specific tools — namely a term extractor called TermoStat and a sentence and lexical aligner called Alinea — are tested in a specific project the aim of which is the development of an English-French dictionary on climate change. We analyze the results of…

  • Two methods for extracting “specific” single-word terms from specialized corpora

Chantal G Lemay, Chantal Lemay et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Recently, corpus comparison has been used by a number of researchers for extracting single-word terms (SWTs) from specialized corpora. It is viewed as a means to supplement multi-word term (MWT) extraction, the focus of which is on noun phrases. However, little is known about the value of this technique in a terminological setting. This paper examines two different methods for finding French SWTs in the field of computing. The first one (M1) comp…
