  • Human Papillomavirus Vaccination and Pap Smear Rates Among Burmese Refugee Girls in a Healthcare System in Omaha, Nebraska

Open Access•Dorothy Kenny, Dorothy Xuanxian Kenny et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Health•2021

While human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccinations and Pap smear screenings are known to improve the survival rates and incidence of cervical cancer, refugee populations have traditionally been disadvantaged within this arena. Due to past and recent political issues in Myanmar, Burmese refugee women in Nebraska may be at particular risk due to their increasing numbers. This study examined 65 female Burmese refugees who were candidates for HPV vaccina…

  • A reception study of machine translated subtitles for Moocs

    Ke Hu, O''Brien et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2019•Cited by: 2

As access has grown to online courses in the form of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), the language barrier has become an important issue for users worldwide. Machine translation (MT) appears to offer an alternative or complementary solution to existing forms of MOOC translation. Very little attention has been paid, however, to the use and utility of MT for MOOC content. The main goal of this research is to test the impact machine-translated s…

  • Explicitation, Unique Items and the Translation of English Passives in Thai Legal Texts

Open Access•Don Kenny, Dorothy Kenny et al.•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 26

Despite growing interest in the study of translation in Thailand, relatively little has been published on contemporary Thai translation practices. This study presents a first attempt to explore legal translation into Thai, using both a purpose-built parallel corpus of international treaties translated from English into Thai, and a monolingual corpus of non-translated Thai legislation. Drawing on previous corpus-based studies concerned with genera…

  • A virtuous circle

Joss Moorkens, Stephen Doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This study compares consistency in target texts produced using translation memory (TM) with that of target texts produced using statistical machine translation (SMT), where the SMT engine is trained on the same texts as are reused in the TM workflow. These comparisons focus specifically on noun and verb inconsistencies, as such inconsistencies appear to be highly prevalent in TM data. The study substitutes inconsistent TM target text nouns and ve…

  • Corpus Analysis in Translation Studies

Open Access•Don Kenny, Dorothy Kenny•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

Translation normally involves the production of a written text in a target language based on a previously existing written text in a source language, while its sister activity, interpreting, usually involves spoken (or sign) language.

  • Wortverbindungen - mehr oder weniger fest

Annelies Häcki Buhofer, Annette Sabban et al.•BOOK•Wortverbindungen - Mehr Oder…•2004

Im Band werden aktuelle Probleme und Tendenzen der Mehrwortforschung aus unterschiedlichen theoretischen und methodischen Blickwinkeln betrachtet, so wie sie sich z.B. aus der Phraseologie und Parömiologie, aus der Kollokationsforschung, aus Lexikologie und Lexikografie, Lexikontheorie, Grammatik und Pragmatik sowie aus der Computer- und Korpuslinguistik ergeben.

  • Creatures of Habit? What Translators Usually Do with Words

Open Access•Don Kenny, Dorothy Kenny•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2002•Cited by: 1

This paper focuses on some of the methodological and theoretical challenges presented by the investigation of "sanitisation" in translated texts through the analysis of semantic pros- ody. The main hypothesis is that target texts tend to use toned down vocabulary compared with their sources, and that this results in the creation of a "sanitised version of the original
